I'm going snowboarding for the first time on Monday and I'm worried about my knees. They don't hurt enough to warrant taking prednisone on a regular basis, but they start hurting when I bend them pretty far, so I'm really worried about how they will handle snowboarding. Another concern is even though most days I'm only in a small amount of pain, some random days I will wake up with a lot of knee pain-enough that I can barely walk. So my question is, would taking prednisone for the couple of days before my trip cut down on my knee pain? I rarely use it so I'm not sure if it's the type of drug that needs to build up in your system or if I will get immediate relief. I have 5 mg tablets, but I think my rheumy told me I could take up to 20 mg. My next rheumy appt isn't for 3 more weeks and he seems to be on a perpetual vacation so I can never get ahold of him. I've wanted to snowboard for years and I had to pass it up last winter for this same reason, so I'm pretty desperate to try it this winter. Thanks so much for reading and I hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

If, and ONLY if, your doctor has told you to take the prednisone as needed, I would surely be tempted to try it. Prednisone is fairly quick, no 'build up in your system" needed.

However, if you don't regularly take any over the counter anti-inflammatories, it might be better to start with ibuprofen at the maximum dosage. That may take care of the issue without having to rely on a possible mis-use of prednisone.

Have fun & don't get hurt!

Thanks so much for your reply! The prednisone was prescribed on an as needed basis, I've just never taken it so I wasn't sure how fast acting it was. Is 5 mg enough to actually feel relief?

It all depends on the person. Try 5 mg for a few days, then if needed try 10 mg a few days.

If you take 10 mg or higher for more than 4-5 days, then you must ramp down (ie a few days at 5 mg) rather than just stopping. Just stopping can be very dangerous, as in stop-your-heart dangerous.

You really should talk to your dr, prednisone isn't something to play around with.
