I have been in constant pain for over 5 weeks with my right arm and elbow. It gets so bad sometimes I can hardly stand it. Last night I woke up to this terrible pain in my arm. It felt like someone took a hot poker that came out of a fire and shoved it into my forearm and seared my muscle and bone. It was horrible. Has anyone experienced this kind of pain? I don't know how else to describe it. It was a burning pain and it was in one spot. What do you take for something like that? I am on Mobic and Tramadol right now and they are not taking this pain away.

Please help!

When I get this burning (for me it's in my toe joints and feels like someone inserted hot burning acid into them), anti-inflammatory meds work best, but pain meds seem to have no effect at all. I suggest talking to your doctor about another anti-inflammatory besides Mobic -- maybe even some prednisone till you get it under control?

I don't know your other health issues but gout can be extremely painful and can be a side effect from some meds and some AI diseases. especially if you are not as mobile as usual. Ranaulds can be painful as well but usually that turns your toes really purple or really white... (i know i spelled it wrong) I have a painful time with that esp when it is cold.

Thanks for the reply panther fern. I have wondered if it was gout myself! Last year I had this tremendous pain in my second toe. It turned purple and it was a horrible pain. I woke up with it throbbing in the middle of the night. I couldnt even stand the sheet touching it. In the morning I could ne even put my foot down towards the floor without this throbbing stabbing pain. I went to the dr and they didnt know what it was. It went away aw quickly as it came. But the elbow issues are not leaving! Going on week 6 and I can't stand much more! Hopeully the new med will do something.
Thanks again for your response!!

Mine was not gout. If you don't eat anything rich for 2-3 days usually gout pain will disappear, at least the first few times you have it.

My toes burn when I get stressed -- definitely lupus.

that doesn't sound like gout.. esp in elbow... It might be time to talk to your rheumy about trying a different med. and purple toe.. raynaulds and it hurts. (very common with lupus or RA) Have you had cortisone shots in hot spots? and Lynnwood is right you could even call your dr and ask for a medrol pack until you can get in. I take methotrexate 2.5 6 tabs one time a week an infusion of orencia one time a month oxycodone er 20 mg twice daily and i have break thru meds but honestly from lupus i get little relief and i don't like to take more than those listed for the lupus and RA, (i have several other issues) Have you been tried on other meds? you might be having a small flare. I will pray for your arm. I use ice packs and heat packs a ton.. I also use icy hot sticks... i don't know if it helps but it helps the muscles around the joints. What helps my lupus, RA, a ton is Physical therapy and weekly massages but my husband and i pay out the nose for our insurance. If you have someone at home... and you own olive oil.. it works well have someone rub it out for some blood flow and temp relief. I feel for you.. i am sitting with a heat pack on my arm/rt shoulder now.

? I have trouble sleeping i wake in pain from my joints terrible. I do take klonapin at night... (i have tried every sleeping pill they are expensive and i still wake 4-6 a night in pain) so i get up and pace

I also have a terrible time with dryness as lynnwood told me it could be Sjogrens II from meds. my eyes burn constantly and i do use otc systane and my nose and mouth get so dry and sores and what is more bothersome is i feel i cant breathe my throat is tight and dry and my bronchials. my pulmonary says lungs look better than usual and my o2 is great... i breathe in fine but not out. just wondering if anyone had this issue. I feel weird like i am always making noise with my throat lol i have never been a smoker.

another thing... most people who have lupus are thin? I weighed 272 begin of jan I have been doing a modified south beach diet to help lighten the load...i have lost almost 30lbs. considering the lung guy told me i can only walk 10 min a day for exercise i am extremely happy with this. almost 240. I was on steriods for over a year. Is it common to have extra weight with some auto immunes? I have been in a wicked flare, discouraged and overwhelmed as i have been married 19 years and i seriously think we have had 5 tiffs. the last 3 months have been very hard as i have shifted from wife to obligation. that i am just venting and asking for prayer. we have been through military deployments and 15 years of me having persian gulf illness which includes the AI and three teens now... I am terrified of my health being anyones obligation. I am sorry this is so long. I appreciate any prayers. I just started this so i am sure i will soon b making things much shorter and sweeter. I wish you both the best ... May your days have more joy than pain.

Wow panther fern... I am so sorry you are having such a rough time right now. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers!!! It's so tough living with this constant pain. I had a very bad night. My fingers, wrists, hips, elbows and toes hurt so bad throughout the night. I did not sleep well at all...I can  totally relate to your pain.

I also woke up with a very unhappy stomach! Cramping, bloated, sharp pains! I just want to cry. I am so tired of saying ouch and complaining all the time. I feel like a hypocondriac (spell)...

I have to get my eyes examined and then the doc is going to put me on that Plaquenil drug. I have tried every type if pain med there is and nothing seems to work. Rhuemy says if this does not relieve the pain then I can get shots in my elbows.

How long do flares tend to last? Each day I wake up thinking today might be the day that I feel good again... only to find that it isn't! I honestly think I have lupus instead of Mixed connective tissue disease. How much critiria is needed for a diagnosis? I have so many different joints that hurt. Now I am seeing small rashes in places on my body... one on my side and one on my face, my hair is thinning as well. I dont have patches of hair loss, just general thinning. Yuck! My hair is thin anyway so I can't afford to lose too much! I hope it stops!

I don't know about the size of a person being affected by lupus. I am a faily small person. I weigh 116 and am small boned.

I have not lost weight however, I seem to be gaining alittle. Good for you panther fern on your weight loss!!!!

I hope today brings relief to all who suffer from these painful diseases. And don't forget, today is Rare Disease Day!

Hugs

Rhonda

Hi Rhonda, like lynnwood, I get it in my toes, but also have had it in my arm as you describe. It was actually radiating down from my neck and shoulder and after painful emg tests determined to be tendonitis. It was never connected to the antibiotic I had taken a month or so earlier called levaquin/tequin for a urinary tract infection, though I'm pretty sure it caused it. The pain was crippling for about a month, went away, came back in the other arm for about as long, and then it went away.

I did get xray of my neck and that was helpful and you should get it checked out. Lots of people have arthritis in their necks that pinch nerves and cause weird pain or other sensations, and with special care, it gets better and if it would ever come back, then you would know what to do. They called my "a roaming tendonitis of lupus" though my normal neck exercises helped it.

Hope this helps.
Love, Marji

Thank you for your thoughtful words, ive been having new symptoms .... plaquinel did give me quite a bit of relief earlier in my disease. it doesn't have many side effects which is beneficial. one is with the eyes but it is easy to determine and not common.. if you start seeing red blotches get off it.

love to all of you and hugs.

Hi! Everyone,
I have pain like that in my heels, and my thumbs every so often. My rheumy prescribed a Flector Patch, an adhesive, easy on my skin kind, that sticks right over the sore spot, (I use an ace wrap to anchor it on my heel at night) and it has always helped. It is a locally absorbed NSAID and I am so grateful it works so much.
Hugs,
suetoo
