I have been having sharp pains on the left side of my chest, sternum, pressure in and under my ribs, and shortness of breath. It's like having asthma, not in your air passageways, but just in and around your heart, lungs and chest. I went to the hospital a week ago with stabbing pain on the left side of my chest, stabbing right through my heart and into my back. Pain radiated through my arm, shoulder, spine and neck. I immediately went to the ER. They did an EEG, found a rapid heartbeat, took blood, found nothing abnormal and then took a chest x-ray, which was also presumed normal. They didn't treat me at all and diagnosed me with GERD, something I already have and knew it wasn't the cause. My doctor called me the next day, and reported that I actually did have an abnormal x-ray. She didn't tell me why, but I found out later that it was a lymph node that was enlarged. So she had me do a CT scan, but I won't know for another week if they found anything. I'm scared it might be cancerous or nothing at all, and if it's nothing, she won't treat me and I'll keep getting worse. I'm pretty sure it may be pericarditis or pleurisy, especially because of my symptoms, tests, age and gender. Would a CT scan catch chest inflammation, if that's what it is?

I keep having chest tightness, I can't breath well for periods of time, my heart area gets stabbing pains and it gets better with rest. I'm sure it's inflammation, but the ER doctor wrote my theory off and didn't treat me. I went to a Rheumatologist the next day. He didn't seem to think it had anything to do with a Rheumatological disorder, and totally ignored me when I told him about my malar rash. He basically told me I was crazy and nothing was there, didn't care, even though I was slightly red that day. He said I had a neurological disorder and need to see a neurologist. But neurological problems are only part of what I'm having. I don't know what to do.

I just found out that the cause of my chest pain is being caused from a fungal granuloma and swollen lymph nodes along my lungs caused by what my doctor thinks is sarcoidosis. My CT scan showed a small mass in my chest, it wasn't cancer or fluid, but a cellular nodule. She thinks the only other possibility is a similar autoimmune disease. But whatever kind of inflammation it is, it's causing inflammation in my chest and spine. I'm having MS like symptoms and mini seizures from the spinal inflammation. She said my tests for lupus were negative, meaning she thinks my negative ANA is evidence against lupus. I'm also having ankylosing spondilitis, peripheral neuropathy, malar/butterfly rash and raynaud's phenomenon too. Can both sarcoidosis and lupus really mimic each other that closely? I'm very frightened now. Can lupus cause similar ganulomas?

I don't know about sarcoidosis and lupus mimicking each other, but I do know that
ankylosing spondilitis and lupus share many of the same symptoms.

I hope you get to feeling better soon,

Thank you. From what I read about ankylosing spondilitis, it does seem to share many lupus symptoms. It makes sense.

The fungus infection in my chest is a very strange condition though. I've never even heard of it before. I wonder how often it happens in people with autoimmune diseases.

And you always can ask them to do and echo just to make sure that your heart is doing ok... I am dealing with alot of heart problems with my lupus right now.. and alot of my symptoms are similar to yours but that can mean so many things...

How were you diagnosed with pericarditis, just out of curiosity? I might even ask you a little about your experience with endocartitis, because now I'm scared I might have this as well. I do get purple and red blotches on my skin. Is it possible to miss these heart problems on a CT scan? My chest hurts really bad some days, right over the area where my heart is. But I also feel that there is a lot of involvement with my heart and my neurological issues. My heart beats hard when I'm angry or over exert myself, but I noticed after taking an anti-seizure medication it has gotten slightly better. My whole chest feels weak and strange. What are your heart symptoms and how do you manage them?
