Hi everyone, been a while since I been here. My GI dr. found a 2cm spot on my liver in Jan 2011, he doesnt know what it is, I've had an Ultrasound, 2 Catscans with and without contrast. all w/in a 1 month period. Dr. said he still does'nt know what it is, but said he thinks it may be benign (I wonder why he said that if he don't know what it is). Now he wants me to do a Nuclear test in Loma Linda, CA. I don't know why I would need to do something like that sounds soo scary. I asked him if the spot on Liver is causing my terrible stomach pains/ he said no it wouldnt.
Gosh, I need to make the appt. But, I'm dreading taking another test! I think he should've been able to know by all the test he's already done so far. I did get copies of my catscan results.. it stated couldnt get good readings because I moved a little.
I know I could'nt hold my breath for the 20seconds or so when they scanned me. aagh! has anyone hd one of those test before? I'm starting to feel this DR. is just making me take unnessary test, he should've known by now what it may be.
What are your oppinions? should I get a second opinion?

Thanks

Sounds like you're having a very rough time. Which test confirmed the liver spot, just out of curiousity?

I had biliary problems last summer, where I kept getting pain on my right side where my liver is located, along with nausea, chills, loss of appetite, diarrhea immediately after drinking alcohol, gaseousness, frequent urination, dark urine and bowel movements that ranged from pale to white to almost black. I had blood tests to check my liver function, a CT scan and an abdominal ultrasound, nothing came back positive for liver or gallbladder issues. The symptoms have either vanished since then. I never found out what it was.

I've had two CT scans myself. It's very important to be still and hold your breath when the technician says to. It may be difficult, especially if you experience an digestive reaction to the barium swallow like I did. The problem with CT scans is that they can show whether or not a mass, inflammation, fluid or other deformities exist. They need to get the best pictures they can, however they should have viewed the pictures before discharging so they could repeat the scan for better images.

The problem is that CT scans show that something abnormal is located in your body, but they cannot determine 100% what it is sometimes without a biopsy of the tissue. Many diseases or growths look similar to each other. A spot on the liver could be a cyst, it could be cancerous, or it could be from an infection or autoimmune disease.

The nuclear test shows much more detail of your liver than a CT scan or ultrasound. It sounds easier and less invasive than a liver biopsy, which is probably why he ordered it. If you are that concerned about your liver, you should take the test. It may hurt at first, but it's probably worth that temporary pain. He's probably just trying to do what he can to save you from surgery to get a biopsy, which would be much more risky and painful.

I had to make a similar decision involving a mass in my right lung. My pulmonologist thinks it's a fungal infection, but he can't know for sure. So I had a bronchoscopy done this morning and they had to put a tube down my lung and took a tissue sample while I was conscious and given very little medication for sedation and pain. It hardly helped with the pain and torture. But it may be worth the torture so I can know what it is and treat my chest symptoms.

I'd say take the test, you might not regret it.

I first had an Ultrasound, which detected something on Liver, then CT scan, confirmed there was a 1 1/2 cm spot. a week later, Dr. ordered another different type of CT scan, it was a 2cm round dark spot.

do you know how they do the Nuclear test? I'm so nervous about doing it. I think I'm fearing if I have to enclosed in machine like an MRI. I just had a Brain MRI done in January.
I guess I"m just so nervous and I'm a bigtime chicken when being on freeways, lol. My hubby I know is dreading it, but isn't saying anything yet.
One time coming home from Dr. we had just came of the Cajon pass, I got a panick attack, in car, started crying, because I thought he was going to fast (he really wasn't). We did stop, he calmed me down. I guess this is why I'm dreading going to Lomalinda, aagh!

Can you take a sedative for the trip? Maybe sleep through the trip?

You'll have radionuclide injected into your vein. They will take multiple pictures as this stuff goes through you. The concern is if your CT showed 1 1/2 cm and later 2 cm because of the different testing of the CT or if it infact growing. I have 5 cysts on my liver, they are multiple hemangiomas, and do not grow. After several CT's and an MRI, I was told they would not need retested again. Most liver spots are benign but if one is growing, that is warrant for concern. Even if they are benign, doctors still like to check them for a couple of years to make sure. A CT could not 100% confirm mine either. If you read the report, it sounded like I might be dying from cancer, but that's not the case. I'd have your doctor give you a couple of valium. Sounds like you might need them.

Ive been trying to research how common a spot on the liver is in relation to lupus. My doctor found one 5 yrs ago and 6 months ago I started having pain, swelling, and other related systoms. After having a SPECT scan it was ruled out being a hemangioma and the spot has grown. I am now facing a nuclear MRI, which I have had done before for a unrelated problem. My question has anyone else had this problem due to your lupus and how was it resolved?

I have a friend who has a lot of liver issues with her autoimmune disease. They haven't positively told her it's lupus or not.

However, I've learned that if you have SLE anything is possible and fair game.
