Sometimes you can develop scar tissue from the infection.

Mine is always dark looking... I'm on 40mg Lasix twice a day due to swelling issues.

Have you been checked for Interstitial Cystitis? I know it sounds like a "down pat" type of diagnosis, but actually it is also an autoimmune issue (how I found out I had the other issues) and severe pelvic pain with abdominal swelling (for no "medically apparent reason") are hallmarks... It is where your immune cells eat holes in the bladder wall (for lack of better expressions! LOL!) But Elmiron has been a real good drug for me with that.

I think that all these AI's tend to go hand-in-hand from what I've seen so far--so if you have continuous pelvic pain/bladder issues (especially urinary frequency) you might want to ask for a urologist to check you out... just a thought and I might be totally wrong but only speaking from my own experience of the past year with IC... Hope you feel better soon and glad the bactrim is helping so much! Nicki

dear tflold, the infection usually stats in the bladder and spreads up the urtheter to the kidneys. Get to a uologist right away. Lupus will attack kidneys but you could also have a bacterial infection . Kidney and or bladder infections can be very difficult to clear up. I have a bacterial infection of the kidneys [plus lupus sle] and they found that there is only one antibiotic that it is succeptable to. I do not wish to frighten you but do not neglect this. Have a urine culture done. wishing you every success with this challenge.

My urologist flew the coup, I am waiting for a new doctor to come in, won't be until later in the summer. I have IC, but I haven't had alot of past relief with Elmiron, especially did no good with OAB medications. My bladder has an abnormal shape now, I have to wait to find out why, most of my frequency & pressure issues I have when I lay down, as that is when it can go totally nuts, seems to be nerve related. However, I still no doubt had a kidney infection, and I know the Toradol did it. The infection didn't affect my bladder until like 5 days later.

Has it ever been confirmed that you did in fact have a kidney infection, or at least an infection in your urinary tract? Your symptoms are like mine, but I've never had a positive urine culture. Do you wake up with back pain that won't go away until you urinate?
