I'm wondering if anyone has done any lengthy travelling while having Lupus?  I'm considering a 3 month trip overseas and I have all these meds to carry with me, etc.  Is it unrealistic for me to plan a trip that is so long?  Any comments are much appreciated!

Hi! Ginny,
Wow, a dilemma. My heart says Go! and see the world. My head says...maybe you shouldnt but go anyway. Is it a working trip or a vacation trip? But some thoughts.. Are you going to be on the go most of the time? Or can you schedule in some "Crash" days and rest? I love to travel and have worried about the safety/security of my meds, even in the hotel room safe. (Cause who supplies the keys?) Can you arrange for someone at home to send you 2 or 4 weeks worth of meds at a time priority mail? That worked really well for my sister in law. Does your health insurance have special rules about overseas coverage? Thinking worse case scenario, ambulance care, hospital need? I know someone who needed an air ambulance off a cruise ship in the Bahamas. Could you get trip insurance in case you needed to cut your trip short? My big concern is would you be able to get enough good quality rest? Thinking, Ritz Carlton bed and bath, vs. youth hostel pallet with cold faucet in bushes tongue ? hugs, and go for it,

My longest trip since dx is 3 weeks - which kept the amount of meds manageable. Probably for a longer trip it's best to check with your pharmacy and the countries you'll be traveling in to see what the laws are. Maybe the Embassies would know? I like the idea of have 2-3 weeks at a time mailed -- but again would need to check laws.

As for how long to travel -- it all depends on how you hold up to change and if you can schedule enough quiet time to keep yourself healthy. I did ok on 3 weeks on a sailboat in the Galapagos, but was more than ready to get home.

Safe travels!
