Hello again!

I was wondering if anyone had ever had a bone break from doing nothing. My femur fractured, the fracture was about six inches long, and they have no explanation. I just woke up one morning and couldn't put any pressure on it. The doctor said that there was also swelling around the bone but that was unexplained as well.

My question is...has anyone had a bone break for no reason? If so, did you get a better answer than I did?

Hope everyone is having an okay day and thanks for reading!

Haven't had that happen, but it sounds terrifying! I hope they can come up with an explanation soon.

Hi! Everyone,
I don't think spontaneous fractures in women are that uncommon. It is linked to low bone density, osteoporosis, menopause and hormone changes, thyroid gland/parathyroid gland malfunctions, steroids, and genetics. Some drugs that affect calcium or calcium levels can be blamed, too. Many falls in our elderly are blamed for hip fracture, when it is increasingly thought that the hip/femur fracturing is what then results in the fall. I've heard docs tell family members that it "just happens". I hope your leg heals well, and fast.

God knows, even if I don't....

Yes, my coworker actually broke her back the same way. She was walking on a very flat pavement and her and her husband both heard a snap and she went crashing down to the ground. They diagnosed her with osteoprosis shortly after that!!! I would think you should be tested for different things to try and prevent other bones from breaking. Maybe you should question your doc again about it or maybe even a second opinion.

So sorry this has happened and I sure hope you can have a quick recovery and that the pain is controlled!!!

I have been tested for osteoporosis and I don't have that. Had a full body scan and that was normal, except my hip. I am only 32 and have not gone through menopause. It is a mystery, but the doctor said that it should heal and that I just have to stay in a wheelchair for a couple of months...not an easy task with a 6 and 2 year old at home. Thanks for all the replies and well wishes.

Hi, sorry u r going through this. Have u been tested for brittle bone disease. my cousin as fractured 7/8 times for no reason, just walking along & his ankles fracture also he has curvature of the spine (symptom of brittle bone). Also I have blue sclera, low vit d & osteopenia (all syptoms) my mum fractured her arm in 3 places from falling about 1/2 metre years ago & my grandfather had osteoporosis & crumbling spine. I think the disease has gone undiagnosed in our family, but I am seeing a clinical geneticist next week so hopefully we will get some answers. Good look with everything & hope u get your answers soon. : )
