I want to know exactly what to request at my Monday Dr. appt. I have a feeling my Dr. will say that my ANA was only 1:40 so we'll monitor it and leave it at that. I've been dealing with pain and fatigue for TEN. YEARS. I am determined to get answers. What specific tests can I request if I suspect Lupus or MCTD? Any panels or specific test names would be great. Also, would an MRI help? I'm sick of suffering and am determined to get some answers this time, but I need some knowledge. Thank you!

Ask for a referral to a rheumotologist. They are the drs that know about auto-immune diseases -- regular GPs & PCP aren't trained to identify or treat these illnesses.

There are a number of standard tests that are run for lupus and 1 additional one for MCTD.

MCTD is confirmed by an anti RNP test.

Here is the LFAI site with a full description of the tests normally done for lupus and MCTD.

Sed rate and CRP are tests for general, systemic inflammation and should also be done.  If you have any muscle involvement a CPK test should be done as well.  None of these are tests specific for any given disease but help to define what the problem is.

Any experienced rheumatologist should know about these but make sure the doctor is experienced in treating lupus and other AI diseases like MCTD and myositis.  Depending on your presentation and other test results Ultrasound, mri, emg, or muscle biopsies could be ordered.  You will be an expert at the end of all of this.

Thank you! Lynnwood, I was seeing a rheumatologist for awhile, will start back up with him once I get further test results for him to review. Hopefully he can order more specific tests that are listed on the site Bill referred. I'm going to take some notes on that.

Today is a particularly bad day. I'm at work and trying to stay awake . Not sure I can make it through the day, but went home early last Thurs and was out Friday. So trying to stick it out : /
