Hi, I'm a new member and I was hoping to get some advice. I've had symptoms for years of something, it would all get worse, then better again... Muscle twitches, fatigue, joint pain, stomach pain, etc... Anyway, things have gotten worse in the past year and in the past two months I have hade swollen, painful glands, pain and possible arthritis in my feet, ankles, knees ,hands..., fevers that come and go, major fatigue, nights I can't sleep because of pain, and the feeling that my legs are buzzing. Walking up steps has become an ordeal, and being in the sun does seem to make it worse. Also, I used to just get pale when I felt lousy, now I seem to be pale, with really dark circles and rosy cheeks with a pink nose. Does that sound like a butterfly rash? I don't have insurance right now, we started a small local business and all our money is in that, so I have been seeing a natural dr. He ran a bunch of tests and says my ANA is moderately high (don't know the exact numbers, will get them today), my white blood cells are low, my liver test came back high normal, and my blood sugar slightly high. He then ran the other auto immune markers off the original blood test and they were all negative. He now wants to take a wait and see approach and retest in three months. I don't know that I am comfortable with that. My hair is falling out, and my scalp itches, I don't seem to ever get bald spots, thank goodness, but still disturbing. Also last week the joints in my hands swelled and they hurt. I am only in my thirties but I feel old. Before this, the only real thing the had found was a fatty liver, and they told me not to worry about that. Sorry this is so long and unorganized, I'm frustrated, scared, and feeling rotten. There is something wrong and I'm tired of not knowing what to do! I have rheumatoid arthritis on both sides of the family, and lupus keeps coming up. Should I pursue this more forcefully? I really need some advice. I go in again later today and anything you can tell me would be very helpful. Thank you so much.

I know all too well the agony of trying to figure out what to do in the absence of insurance. However, for me anyway, the question is: what is more valuable, my life or my money?

The best Dr to see, esp. with the rheumatoid arthritis connections, would be a rheumotologist. Are there any clinics or public health facilities around?

With your symptoms and concerns, I would not want to wait 3 months -- whether "natural" or traditional doctors, something needs to be happening to treat your symptoms. It's not healthy to feel bad!

Best wishes,

Thank you. I'll talk to him today and see how he reacts. If I need to I can find another dr., unfortunately we live in a rather isolated small town and I don't think we we have a rheumatologist. Are there any other doctors that are able to diagnose this type of thing?

An immunologist can help.
