I'm usually on the fibro and arthritis sites but when I went to my primary yesterday for severe
joint pain and a depro medrol shot he said he wants to do blood tests on me. The usual sed
rates and cbc but he wants to do a dual strand dna test to check for lupus. I know many of these
diseases mock each other but what are some of the signs of lupus? I have had a white stripe on the
bridge of my nose but don't know anything else about this disease. Could you please help me?

Lupus has so many faces. That is why it's so hard to tell without many tests if you have it. Even then the doctor's not sure. You can follow the link in the moderator's signature to Lupus.com and read of the many faces of lupus.

For me Lupus is these symptoms:
joint pains
extreme fatigue
UTIs
tendonitis flares in different joints
fevers
rashes on my face (whole face turns brick red)
sun sensitivity
sudden attacks of itchiness everywhere

Nana,

Welcome to the Lupus Forum.

I've been a Lupus Patient and Moderator here for 9 years and this is the first time I've heard of a DNA test for Lupus!!! I think if that was definitive the Lupus Organization would be talking about it -- it sounds to me like someone wants an expensive DNA test for no good reasons. Perhaps he said ANA test? That is what is usually used for Lupus.

As Joy says, you can read more about the symptoms and how Lupus is diagnosed from the Diagnosing Lupus link in my signature.

Hope you feel better soon,

I went for blood work today and found out it's a double strand DNA test. It's for anti-bodies found
in 1/2 of lupus sufferers. He's also done 2 different arthritis tests...the sed rates and anti-CCP for
the arthritis factors. The doc is also sending me to a back specialist for the degenerative arthritis and
a knee dr as they are feeling like they are ready to blow out again (I've had surgery on both). Mix
that with the fibro, heart problems, sciatica, scoliosis and now the lupus question and I'm kind of a mess
Just keep smiling smilewinkgrin and they'll never know how bad off I am!!!

I got the results of the double strand DNA. High marker is 9 and I top out at a 13. This is a new
marker test for lupus and people who run high are usually positive for lupus. My insurance papers
was billed $75 for the test.

Glad you've got an answer. Sorry it's not happy news.
My tests were $400 after insurance was billed. I'm still paying...

I got copies of the blood work even though I don't go back to the drs for another week or so.
I've been looking up what the different things mean...my sugar is a little high at 123 and the
bun/creat ratio is 14 points high. That may come from eating ham and cheese every day so I'll
lay off that and have him retest that one. There's different meaning of that test and elevated
protein is one. He's going to send me for more blood work when I go back. My sed rates are 23
which are up but not too bad. I've had arthritis since I was 7 and diagnosed at 25, my Dad was
7 and my nephew was 2. Now my grandaughter shows signs, one at 9 years (she's now 15 and
has shoulder issues) and my 7 year old who was just diagnosed with bursitis in her hip.

My 19yr old niece was just told her RNP was high. That points to possible MCTD or lupus.
She says it's a conspiracy. ;))

I don't think they did that one on me. I was supposed to have ANA done but I don't see it on the
print out. I asked for a copy of the bloodwork results so I can look up some of the stuff they did.
Still don't understand half of it but it looks impressive!! I was diagnosed at 25 with RA and about
15 years ago with fibro. I wonder if the lupus can be from a blood transfusion seeing as it's blood
borne. Silly question but I got 2 units around 6 or so years ago.

Does anyone with Lupus here have a white stripe on the bridge of their nose? I don't have rashes
but I do have the stripe that has grown in recent years. I always joke that it's where they pulled
off my made in Tiwan sticker. yeah

Lupus isn't blood born, so there is no reason to fear the blood supply. If you are in otherwise good health you can even donate blood!
