I saw my pulmologist today because I've been coughing a lot and my ribs were hurting.
She did an xray and said my lungs are smaller than normal. She said also it's the norm for Lupus patients to have smaller lungs. shocked
Have any of you been told that? confused
She put me on a stronger dose of Advair and gave me a perscription for a zpack in case I get worse. eyes

I've never heard or read that before. Not entirely sure I believe it, either!

I mentioned my conversation with my pulmologist to my rheumy today. He said there is a condition that can happen with some Lupus patients...Shrinking Lung Syndrome.
It does exist!
Here's a link :

He said it's rare and wasn't sure I have it, but my pulmologist is supposed to monitor it and keep him informed of any changes.

Learn something new every day.  I think this syndrome is very rare and this is the first time I have heard of it in 6 years of researching lupus.
I was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension but it turned out the problem was severely weakened diaphragm muscles from polymyositis.  As they strengthened my problems went away.  Dodged a bullet since it was feared that scleroderma had gotten into my lungs.

If I read the research pages right it usually happens if you're asthmatic and have SLE, too. But even then it's very rare.
I have had moderate asthma for 20+ years. :(
I'm hoping that my lung size is the norm for me. She's supposed to compare my xrays yesterday to the ones I had with her over five years ago. Meanwhile I can't stop coughing.
