Hi. I'm a 50 year old male. I was diagnosed with AOSD in March 2012. I had high fever daily for about 10 days (103, late afternoon, early evening), high ESR, hi Ferratin, low RA factor, joint pain in back of head, shoulders, elbows, and some very achy thigh muscles.

I was put on 60mg Prednisone for 2 weeks then started tapering...
50, 40, 30, 25 (5 days each)...20 (10 days)...15, 10, 7.5 (14 days each)...In a few days I start 5mg for 30 days.
I also take 15mg Methotrexate weekly.

I tolerated high levels of pred very well. At 10 mg, I started feeling some of the "familiar" joint pain plus a lot of other random pain...jaw soreness, back pain, sore throat (thyroid inflammation?) and daily headaches. A couple of Ibubrofen solves all pain for most of the day. I'm also fatigued after half a day of normal activity. I haven't had any fevers and the joint pain is not nearly as bad as it was in March. I've been to my Rheumy a few times and all my blood tests are improving and almost back to normal.

Can anyone tell me if this pain is common while tapering off prednisone? I don't think my AOSD is coming back, but I don't know what "normal" is anymore?

The predisone reduced the inflamations. Now that the levels are dropping your inflamation is coming back.

From what I've read about stills you're always going to have it. You just manage it like we do lupus.

So, I'm tapering off prednisone so that my adrenal glands "kick in" and start producing cortisol again. If I take Ibuprofen to reduce the inflammation, will that interfere with my adrenal glands restarting?

No, ibuprofen will not interefere with adrenal glands starting. Not the same type of medication.
