Hi,

I spent the entire day out in the sun a week ago, something I usually dont do. I noticed the next day I had a nickel sized legion like rash on my face. It was kind of like a ring shape. Now it is fuller and more scaled looking. I have had issues twice in past with a rash covering my cheeks, nose and forehead pretty badly. I decided to look up what I had and a image came up for Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus. Now the legion that was in the photo was the same exact one I had but I just have one, the pic had a few. Has anyone had this strange nickel sized legion on their face after prolonged sun exposure? My friend said she noticed a butterfly like shape rash faint on my face the other day (honestly I didn’t event notice).

I called my Rheumy he said not to worry it could just be a strange sun  burn but the issue with that is I don’t sunburn, never had since I was a kid. Also its odd its just a nickel shape on one part of my face I am not burned anywhere else. He said I could come in but I declined so I am just monitoring it and if its still there in a week I will make an appt.  Right now he said he wants me to stay out of the sun.

Hello,

Sounds like the beginning of what is known as the "butterfly" shaped rash that many people with Lupus tend to get. Although, I have never had a facial outbreak I have had skin eruptions that required hospitalization. I really wish you would do at least a "drive thru" visit with your doctor. He/she needs to see and document the lesion just in case it is of the type that signals something else like a reaction to the plaquenil for example. Think about it if it doesn't resolve soon, regards, L

I get a really strong butterfly rash when I go out in the sun. Sometimes worse on one side of my face than the other.

Maybe you could take a picture of the rash and bring it with you the next time you the doctor. If it doesn't go away soon you should go in.

Try not to go out in the sun. We need to be careful cause the sun can cause us to flare.

Hi Lawchick. I'm catching up on my HW reading. I recently had a dime size scaled lesion on my face near my temple. Rheumy said not to worry. It disappeared in a few weeks. I hope your's is getting better. Love, Butterflake

Did your doc tell you why not to worry? After a few weeks its starting to fade.

HI Lawchick, from what I understand, it's a reaction from the sun, that may be the reason he said not to worry. Of course, if you've never had it before, I can imagine you would worry, alot. I've gotten a dime sized blister on my hand from a few minutes sun exposure a few months ago. I just looked it up and went hmm, well there's another symptom to add.  But, that's me. Everyone is different. One of my signs of the confirmation of my sle was my little ol butterfly rash which now migrates a little bit on my cheeks. When I first met my rhuemie he pointed it out and asked a slew of questions and sent me to the lab to confirm his wonderings. My butterfly rash, well I would call it more of a small moth, will get tiny blisters if I am in the sun more than 5 minutes without shade. lucky me. It also burns like crazy.
I have learned, the more I obsess about it, the longer it stays. I reckon it's good ol stress....
