How much do expiration dates matter for things like antibiotic ointments and cortisone creams?

If I don't find something to stop the itching in my ear canals I might go crazy, and I hate buying something that is already in my cabinet!

Thanks turn

I was told they are good to use up to a year after they expiration date. Don't remember who told me...but i use all my meds that have expired. But not past a year.

You could call the pharmacist that prescribed it for you and ask. That is what I do when I have any kind of question about my meds.

Sorry you are having such a problem with your ears. I hope you find something that you can use.

Hugs,
MaryAnn

Not a prescription. More than a year old, but I'm not saying how old! lol

Probably won't hurt you, but may not provide any benefit.  Either way - time to toss it ;-)

Yesterday I finally checked the expiration date on a bottle of Worcestershire sauce, just before adding it to a beef dish.  The expiration date was early 2008!  And I know I've used it within the last year.  Eesh.

When I buy an item like Worcestershire sauce, I write the date purchased on the lid. Then whenever I clean out the fridge, anything more than a year old gets tossed. And I clean the fridge out every couple of weeks (when the leftovers I haven't eaten try to take over).

Now guess I need another plan for bathroom staples. My cortisone creme says it expired in 2004. But it did stop my ears itching....so maybe I'll keep it! ;)

My opinion, the pharmaceutical companies place a strick exp date to cover their ass, but the efficacy of the meds is much longer. My guess is a couple of years past exp. If you try something and it doesn't work, you know it's too old. As a general rule I don't like to use something 5 yrs past expiration date. I know lots of folks who would cringe at this, but I'm wierd. Love, Butterflake
