I am only 36 years old and Bowel incontinence usually, typically only happens with elderly people.
This is sooo Bizar. Its not all the time. I think I went maybe 6 months without it happening.. THen it will keep happening for a week. Sometimes a little and sometimes allot. That is so embarresing I dont know what to do. Two nights ago I got up at about 4 in the morning and I didn't feel right and its so embarresing just to type this even tough I am not face to face with you all . When it does happy I dont have the urge to go or hold it. I just realize its leaked. Occasionaly I can hold it it a little, but for the most part I just simply dont know its going to happen.

I had a colonoscopy two weeks ago. He found nothing but just some internal hemoriods. He was not concerned. No cancer. But there HAS to be a reason for this. I am too young for this. I eat a ballanced meal. Do I go to a Doctor and talk more about this? I thought it would all get resolved with my colonoscopy doc. But he came to talk to me about my diet and to make sure I take fiber supliments every day. WOW do you know what a friggen mess I would be in if I was taking fiber supps. Maybe its not even lupus related. I am at a loss. Its not a daily thing as if I need a diaper like a baby... lol but its probobly the most embaressing thing that can happen to a person. Someone anyone... help..

Thanks
Steph

PLEASE and advise would greatly greatly greatly be appreciated. I am so embarresd to ask this but I dodnt know where else to go. I know I there has got to be a solution and a certain type of DR to see. Please help me! confused mad

I had this happen to me when my lupus was more active. I always thought it was my lupus wrecking havoc in my bowels, as it was always accompanied by cramps across my lower abdomen (ie large intestine). I could feel the cramp move from one side of my stomach to the other. After 3-5 minutes of this I had to void immediately.

I found if I ate smaller meals with lots of water and didn't eat a lot of one item (esp. bread or pasta) it happened less. Eventually it quit - from time to time I get something similar, but the urgency is much much less.

(I could tell you the story about being a passenger in a car using a quickly grabbed plastic bag to save the car seat and my clothes....but that's probably enough info for you to imagine the rest.)

I am not exactly sure what advice to give you, but I can offer my support. I too am about your age and have the same thing happen. The two times that it is most embarrassing is at night or if I am intimate (if you get my drift). I am becoming better at knowing if it is possible to happen. I typically feel some sort of (I can't describe it) feeling a couple hours before hand (or I may have had loose bowels that day). What I do if I suspect it at night is place a towel under me (and I am unclothed). I have thought about buying an adult um, diaper (?) but I am not yet 40. I just can't do that.

The dr I would see is a Gastroenterologist. You can find one that specializes in incontinence and autoimmune disorders (if there is one around you). Maybe someone else has a better idea?
UCTD (suspected Lupus) and probably Fibromyalgia.... still going through the tests and all that.

I had it happened to me a couple of times in the past...lifting an heavy object, gas, out of the blue...
My niece kept calling me a big old baby (I'm 44).

I assumed I'd ate something that hated me.

Stephanie.. about using the fiber...
using the fiber will make it bulk up.. or firmer... that is what I was told... maybe you should try it and see if that would help you....

Hi Steph. This has been a problem with me for years, but Align probiotic has really helped. I can now tell when I have to/am going. Also, to help control things my gastroenterologist gives me prescription lomotil (over the counter Immodium) to stop the diarrhea once it starts. I also take gas-ex. I've had many tests. At first my GI doc thought it was IBS, but has since decided it's Lupus colitis. Prior the Align I had to wear Depends diapers. I still often use Poise or Tena pads. Also my GI doc suggested I take lomotil before I go out for peace of mind. You're not alone! I hope this helps. Love, Butterflake

I hope that you do find help for it, and if you find out anything profound, please let me know. It is so embarrassing when it happens.

RE: Gastroenterologists - Honestly, I didn't realize that specialists would specialize within their fields. It makes sense, I just never thought about it until I saw one earlier this year. He is an Ophthalmologist who only deals with retina issues. My Neurologist deals with migraine/sleep, and my ENTs both cover different areas.Even within their own field, they will not cross over and treat me for something they do not specialize in. I don't know where you live, but if there is a teaching hospital near you, they probably have the best doctors for these things. Since the doctors teach within their fields, they have to keep up. It can be nice.

I do have a Gastro, but I usually only see her when my bariatric doctor thinks I have an ulcer (haven't had one yet). She specializes in the issues that surround bariatric surgery patients. Thankfully, I have not actually needed her for anything beyond a scope, although I should probably call her and deal with the issue of incontinence. I do not know how familiar she is with autoimmune disorders.

I have found out a lot about Lupus since I was diagnosed a year ago. Loose bowels is because the spleen is dumping. so you have to figure out how to get your spleen function strengthened. This is a Chinese Medicine approach. Acupuncture can help the spleen. Also foods that warm up the spleen are helpful. ginger for example, add real ginger to your diet.
Lupus flares are also related to wheat intolerance and the GMO's in food. for my blood type (0) i have to avoid wheat and corn. Organic non genetically modified grains are okay, but wheat is instant gas for me. And if I eat too much wheat I can get burning pains in my feet.
I see some people talking about low protein. Your kidneys and adrenals are under attack, the exhaustion is adrenal exhaustion, so the caffeine has to go because it gives you false energy. REST fixes the body. But adrenal exhaustion is a real culprit with LUPUS .... If you cut out all the allergic foods, and rest when you need to, and avoid chocolate, coffee, and that long list that is all over this site, you WILL improve.
A good regime of chinese herbs will also help, but you need a qualified omd to assist you. Acupuncture is an IMMEDIATE turn around if you are sick!!!!!!!!!!!! Clinics also give FREE acupuncture in some cities. LA has it.
