I am not sure what is going on but I have been having chest pain (when breathing) that turned into my airway swelling. Now I have no voice and cannot swallow very well.

Had a round of antibiotics (2 actually) and now am on 40 mg Prednisone (and not sleeping). Everything is still there and getting worse. I am beginning to have trouble swallowing water and saliva. The pain is a little (very little) better since the steroids, just not enough.

This has been going on for a month now. I am post surgery but everything was fine for 3 1/2 weeks post op. Any thoughts? I am not sure how much longer I wait since I am afraid that it will get so bad I will not be able to breathe. It is going downhill very quickly.

What was your surgery? "How much longer you wait"? I certainly hope you are not waiting to see a Dr, please head directly to one.

I'm rather confused, as you talk about having antibiotics - is that for the chest pain or is this swallowing thing a new issue? Possibly related to your surgery or a reaction to a new medication?

Please take care of yourself.

I had a hysterectomy. The antibiotic is because the doctor thinks I have bronchitis (upper resp. infect.) and now all of this swelling.

He said he is not sure if it is pleurisy or inflammation of my throat. He wants to try prednisone for pleurisy...though I have never had problems swallowing with pleurisy before (I have had pleurisy 5 times before).

I think that my GP is just confused and not sure what to do. I tend to stump him. I am not sure how long to wait until I go to someone else. Not sure who else to go to. I really do not want to go to the ER but need some relief.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'd think I'd go to the ER right away. You might be having bronchal spasms.

Hello All!

I thought that I would update. They have found that I have an enlarged thyroid and that is causing all the trouble. They are running antibody tests for thyroid but not sure which ones.

Question:

Has anyone had lupus attack the thyroid? If so, what happened and how did they treat it?

Thanks for any insight. It hurts so bad and I have to have an ultrasound and barium swallow first thing Monday morning. Not looking forward to that. shakehead

I hope you all are having a "good" day. If not, that it might get better soon!!

The barium swallow is not too bad. I just don't like the pineapple flavoring. :P
The ultrasound isn't too rough. I remember having one. The hard part is when you have to keep your neck extended back as they rub your throat. It feels like they are going to strangle you.

I have hypothyroidism and it's not too rough. Just remember to take my meds and get regular bloodwork.
