A few weeks ago I started to have so many signs of illness. And now the list is growing, I have stiffness in my back and my jaw and occasional weakness in my arms. I have very few feeling good days. And now I went to a Neuro doc and he ordered an MRI and more blood tests. The MRI shows some abnormalities and I will go back to talk with the Neuro in a few days.

I have had SLE for over 15 years but it is in remission so I am wondering if it is back and would it show up on brain scans? It is so hard to wait for answers while I am sick.

SLE doesn't physically damage the brain so it shouldn't show up in brain scans. MS does show up there. Not sure what else.

Make sure to mention to the Neuro that you'd had a Lupus dx in the past - be ready to answer questions about what treatments you had and their duration.

Perhaps you should see a rheumy?

Thanks for your reply. I wonder if any of the Lupus meds could affect my brain. I was taking Plaquenil and Prednisone for many years? What do you think and I don't remember my Rheumy saying anything about damage to my brain, but to my bones--yes.

And I see my Rheumatologist next week so I am covered there. And I will tell each about seeing the other so thanks again for your input.

LOL. I certainly hope they don't affect one's brain!! Lupus gave my brain enough issues!

On a more serious note -- was on Plaquenil 11 years & Prednisone somewhere between 6-10 years. Just off Plaquenil totally about 2 months ago. I've never read anything about either affecting anything that would show in an MRI - and I don't have the feelings you are experiencing. Prednisone & bones - yes, but if you took calcium replenishment meds even that may not have done damage.

I'm guessing that whatever you have going on is some current disease activity or damage, not a residual effect of long-ago SLE/SLE treatment.

Try not to worry, it just wastes time and doesn't affect the outcome. You have done the "homework" (made appts, etc) and now just try and forget about it till the appts come.

Hi sueg:

Sorry to hear that you're having issues, especially if it's the brain being affected. I have to say that Lynnwood is correct, I've never heard anything about plaquenil or prednisone harming the brain.

I've been on both these medications almost 13 years and never had any issues with my brain as far as that goes. I mean I have trouble with my memory at times but that's either my lupus fog or Fibro fog.

I know that lupus can affect our brain, but normally nothing shows up on MRI. I would make sure you let your Rheumy know that you had/having an MRI done. Try not to worry to much, I'm sure that one of your doctors will be able to figure this out and get you treated and back on track again.

Hang in there and feel free to ask any questions you need.

Hugs,
Barbara

Thanks so much for all your advice. And I agree to just let it rest for now, soon enough I will have some answers. It really helps so much to ask all these questions and have someone who knows the way!

I went to my Rheumy and the Neuro doc and they are not sure of what is going on. Since there are white spots on my Brain Scan, they thought it could be due to Central Nervous System Lupus or from Polio that I had as a child. I read that Migraines can also cause white spots on our brain. The Mayo Clinic website for" Lumbar Puncture" states these things. And both the Rheumatologist and the Neurologist I went to do not think these w/s are due to MS. They really seem baffled.

So I went for a Lumbar Puncture this past week and am waiting for the results.

Do any of you know about CNS Lupus--it seems very serious. And have you had any brain scans that turned out OK?
