So for the last year or so I've had recurrent bladder infections that I am now on a daily dose of bactrim for as long as it takes, I've been vomiting and nauseated for as long and no doctor can tell me for sure that it's the lupus doing this to me!!! I have never had so many bladder infections in my life and that isn't the lupus affecting my body? Give me a break!! I keep getting sore throats, colds and very bad headaches that turn into migraines...again no doctor will say for sure why I keep getting sick!!!

I've also had abnormal paps for the last 2 years!! My meds keep changing and nothing seems to work as well as prednisone but my rheumy does not want me back on steroids...which I totally agree with her on that...but sheesh give me something that'll work because I cannot function most days.

So how do I know if its the lupus or when is it anything other than?

So very confused...please help!! Patty

It sounds like something inflammatory going on, but what is something only a doctor can determine.
Have you read the 11 indicators of lupus? You need to meet 4 of them to be diagnosed. Have you sought a second opinion?

Did you have a positive ANA test?

Couchtater, yes i've been dx'd for 2 years as having lupus. what frustrates me is that the things that are going on with me are not things i suffered from before my dx's. i don't mean to say i've never had uti's but for the last year they've been occurring about every 2 months but they cannot tell me that its the lupus! i've had more colds, joint and muscle pain, sore throats, fatigue, hair loss, loss of appitite and no doctor can say that its because of the lupus....ugh its so frustrating

thanks, patty

I used to get a lot of utis. I started taking high doses of cranberry fruit capsules and I haven't had one since. Maybe this will help you?

but are uti's due to lupus? since being dx'd both my family dr and my rheumy cannot say that the uti's and other ailments are from having lupus. i've had more colds and sore throats and shingles and rashes and God knows what else.

but i will try the cranberry capsules...thanks joy

Hi Snowcone,

I have had recurring kidney/uti issues. Most of the time when the culture was sent away, bacteria did not grow. But the symptoms all seem classic: pain and discomfort, trace of blood and white blood cells in urine. I had remembered asking the doctor why I would have traces of blood. He said it can happen if the kidney is inflamed. So when a trace of protein appeared, I started to wonder. I finally got the nerve to ask if my kidney problems could be autoimmune. He got real quiet and finally said, "I'm gonna look through your file to see if you have ever had an ANA test". I hadn't. I was tested and had positive ANA and another positive test that pointed in the direction of lupus. I have not had an appointment with a rheumatologist yet, but since then I have had other symptoms including a rash on my cheeks and across my nose and the recent stomach and bowel issues.
I tried the cranberry capsules. Maybe I didn't take enough, but they didn't seem to make a big difference. I stopped eating beef and pork and dairy which are hard on the kidneys. That has made a difference. I still get a toothache like pain in my back over my kidney, but that symptom has recently taken a back seat to the stomach issues and last nights fever.

My question for you would be, have they ever cultured a sample? is there real bacteria that the body is fighting? Mine are like kidney infections without the bacteria.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'm back. First let me say that inflammation of the bladder also causes blood and yes a "culture" of the urine to determine the organism and a "sensitivity" to determine what antibiotic will kill that organism are good tests to have for recurrent infections.

Second, I think everyone who has been diagnosed with lupus should own a copy of "The Lupus Book" by Dr. Daniel Wallace. You can get it on Amazon. Several of us on the forum own copies, but it currently doesn't help me because I forgot where I put it and my lupus fog is pea soup thick.

A word of encouragement? The longer you have lupus the better you get to know your body and that sometimes makes this disease a bit easier. Try your best to sleep well, but if you want to post late in the night please don't hesitate. Someone will be along shortly to listen. (((Hugs))) Love, Butterflake

I'll be looking for it also...I've been on so many antibiotics for resistant bacteria and they keep culturing my urine time and time again and without fail its the same thing all over again...new meds and another culture in 6 weeks.

UGH!!!
