I've gotten 2 bloody noses since waking up today. Is this a Lupus symptom? Should I take note and tell my Rheumatologist about this? Thank you for any replies.

Oh, one more thing. My eyes are burning more than usual today too. Do they prescribe drops for Lupus patients with this symptom? Sorry for so many questions, I'm new to Lupus and I'm trying to understand it better. I can get a little annoying with all the questions, sorry.

Hi Melody,

I have had Lupus since 1997 and deal with both very dry eyes and burning eyes. Some of it is attributed to allergies, which have worsened since I have been struggling with Lupus. My eye doctor told me to use a good quality lubricant when my eyes are dry. I use Systane and it works quite well. When they are red and irritated, I use Opcon-A. That helps as well. Both are over the counter. Hope that helps.

If the air is dry I get nose bleeds. Sometimes my allergies will cause nosebleeds.
Try to keep from rubbing your nose and don't blow it. Also ice compress will help shrink the irritated vessels.

I found that Prednisone and/or Lupus caused my skin to get thinner, esp. in the nasal cavities. I generally keep a humidifier going near my bed at night which helps keep those areas moister so they don't crack and bleed.

Sjogren's Syndrome (often suspected if dry eyes, nose, ears or mouth) is quite often a secondary illness accompanying Lupus. Most rheumies recommend an eye lubricant (like Tears Naturale, but nothing with preservatives or anti-redness meds in it, just simple lubrication), and often a nasal spray. I also have the itchy ears, for which I put a little Vasiline on a q-tip & put inside my ears -- works to help skin inside nose as well.

Of course, these are for the more surface bleeding/dryness from the end of the nose (near the mouth). If you are having nosebleeds higher up in your nose, like at the bridge or even more inside -- see your GP & get it checked out.

Best wishes.

Allergies also make my nose bleed as do the medications for the allergies (dry out the nasal cavities).
But your comment about dry eyes really struck a chord! This past June, my retina tore (apparently that can "just happen") and I had emergency laser surgery. The surgeon (not my regular ophthalmologist) asked about the lupus and sjogren's. He prescribed "Restasis" for the dry eyes! The difference is amazing. This past Thanksgiving I was chopping onions (always my job because I never cry) and was stunned to find tears running out of my eyes! First time in years that has happened. Made me smile! Hope you are feeling better.
Take care, Fran

Lynnwood, good idea with the humidifier. Luckily, my husband and I are PCSing to Mississippi in May. We'll be right be water and that should help too! Thanks again! :)
