Hi everybody, I am new here. I am writing because I feel such a wreck and nervous for my appt with my rheumatologist tomorrow. This all really came out of nowhere. Last week on Monday woke up with a severely dry throat, but not painful like strep. It went away in a day but I still felt pretty tired and lethargic and had a swollen gland under my chin (like where a double chin would be) By Friday after going through ups and downs of feeling better than worse again, I called my PCP, he ran blood work on thyroid, liver kidney, CBC, and the typical physical blood work done yearly since I was due up for them anyway. I started feeling fine by saturday and still do but nerves are getting the best of me. the doctor Called yesterday and said everything was normal but then called back in the afternoon saying the ANA test was late and was positive. I asked for a number but was told there was none, just a positive reading. The scary part for me is I read the lupus symptoms and I really don't get them. I also read people who have said the ANA also picks up cancer and that has really scared me especially since I don't seem to have the lupus symptoms. Could it really be cancer? Would my CBC have been normal if so. I'm all confused and scared. I am a 40 year old female if that helps. Any suggestions welcome. Thank you.

You can have a positive ANA without having lupus. It does happen....so relax.

Hi there Joy is correct you can have a positive ANA w/o getting lupus. My daughters has been positive for years since like age 7 she's 21 now and hers has been 1:640 and she still doesn't have lupus.

It's common to get a positive ANA if you have an infection. Now you're asking about the cancer DX, I've not heard that the ANA shows cancer. I have lupus/RA and LGL leukemia, my cancer was confirmed by my bone marrow biopsy and my other blood work. I know that my oncologist didn't go off of my ANA.

I know that they were looking at my lymphocytes, white count, and other various things. Try not to panic and wait and see what the doctors have to say. If you're not having any symptoms of lupus I'd bet that you don't have it.

I hope everything turns out okay and you have nothing but a positive ANA.

Hugs,
Barbara

Thanks Barbara and Joy for the quick responses. Btw Barbara, have they ever been able to explain why your daughter's ANA has been elevated for so long but not found anything? Either way, I hope it is nothing but beleive you me, after losing my mother 10 yrs ago to a heart attack at only 54, having my 11 yr old son diagnosed severly autistic when he was 3 and my dad passing just this past August, I tend to always feel like I'm waiting for that next shoe to fall. I want to be optimistic but sometimes to be quite honest it doesn't feel like that's my luck even though I know deep down these things aren't based on luck. I will hope for the best and keep you posted, thanks again ladies.
