Has anyone had a terrible reaction to mosquito bites?? Without scratching them, they swell up like hives and my ankle is so swollen I can barely move it. After a few days, they look like bruises and then take a long time to go away. I went to the doctor with this complaint many years ago and she just looked at me in amazement and suggested benedryl, which didn't help at all. I have a few on my ankles now that are swollen to the size of a ping pong ball. I can post pictures of them when I get home later.

As a child my mosquito bites got huge. Then they seemed to quit biting me altogether -- maybe sometimes just one or two. Then I think they stopped totally about the time I was put on Plaquenil (the anti-malarial, you know). Off Plaquenil for 3-4 years now, no mosquito bites.

Sorry you have such a reaction -- have you ever tried a hot compress or blowing on them with a hot hair dryer?

I have tried hot compress, ice, elevating them, advil, benedryl... nothing seems to be working. I was just in Florida where I got around 25 bites that did not swell very much at all. I guess it's just Sonoran Desert mosquitoes?

It does seem that reactions vary depending on the type of mosquito. Sorry yours are so bad. I'll post if I think of anything else, but I think you've covered all the remedies I know about...

Oh, maybe cortisone cream?

It may depend on what they were drinking before. Maybe it's a reaction to their previous meal?

Them skeeters love me. When bit, I get welts and bruise - sometimes lasting a week or two. And it doesn't matter if I'm wearing jeans or bug spray. They get me anyway.
