Has anyone else experienced sharp, Intense, stabbing pains in their mid back, on the right side? It only lasts about a minute or two, but I swear it takes my breath away. Don't know if its related to the lupus or not..

Hi I used to have some very intense sharp pains on my right side that started either in my mid back or stomach and would go through to the opposite side. Sometimes I couldn't tell if it started in my back or in my stomach by 2 minutes or so I could feel it going thru my body and coming out the other side.

I'd also feel nauseated and sometimes vomited. I might have sweating and I'd have diarrhea really bad at times, the pain was so intense I'd be in a fetal position and rocking back and forth to relieve the pain. Come to find out I was passing gallstones, every time I'd go to the ER and they would check my gallbladder there wouldn't be any stones. I was always told I was fine.

I spent one full year having attacks, they started out slow and I ended up having them just drinking water. At the end of the one year, I finally talk the surgeons into going in and looking and if my gallbladder was bad to take it out. I had severe jaundice and the only thing I could eat or drink was popcorn plain no butter nothing on it and water.

You see I was only 22 and they figured there was no way I could have gallstones. In Oct of 1987 I had my gallbladder removed and they discovered that one I was passing all of my stones and two I had severe gallbladder disease. The duct the stones would travel thru were all scared up from me passing them. The inflammation in my gallbladder was so bad, when they lifted up my gallbladder it fell apart.

My surgery was done the old fashioned way, I've got a beautiful 6" scar to prove it. It was a bit bigger than normal because they didn't know what was wrong with me so they did some searching in my belly. Plus they took out my appendix at the same time, even though it was perfectly healthy. My Rheumy believes that most likely my inflammation of my gallbladder was caused from my lupus. So, could lupus cause this type of pain, yes in my opinion it could. I guess it's going to depend if it's coming from your gallbladder.

Now I'm no Doctor and I can't give you medical advice but I'd suggest you see your Dr and let them know what is happening and get some tests done. If your pain is so bad that you can't stand it I'd suggest you go to the ER and be seen ASAP. If you can wait till morning go to urgent care. I'm sure they will run a lot of tests and figure out whats going on.

If your gallbladder is bad and you need surgery, today's surgery is pretty simple, most patients go home same day. They remove the gallbladder thru a tiny little hole. I believe you end up with 3 tiny little holes.

Several members on the forum have had theirs removed this way. Some have had it done the way I had it done. I'd call your Dr first thing and let them check you. Hope you get to feeling better really soon. Let us know what you find out.

Hugs,
Barbara

BFogg - I second what Barbara Lee said... Definitely sounds like your gallbladder.

I've had issues now for two years, two ultra sounds, and one HIDA scan just to prove it's working fine and dandy (no stones, ejecting bile normally). So I give up. When the pain is severe, and has been building for hours, my only relief is a cup of apple juice with a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. It seems to stop the spasms.

Barbara Lee - I was unsure if lupus could affect the gallbladder, but according to you it sounds like it can. Inflammation of my gallbladder and pancreas would explain a lot.

Okay, thanks so much for the input! I've just been very worried because I'm new to this and I've always been healthy until recently. I'll just have to get used to this from now on I suppose!

I hope you both can get your pains to lessen and the doctors can figure out whats causing the pain. Golden you sound like me and what I went thru. You most likely may be passing your gallstones. I know they hurt like a bugger to pass.

BFogg welcome to the forum and I notice you mentioned that you're freaking out with the DX of the lupus. Please feel free to ask any questions you have. There's bound to be someone here who has had experience with it. If for some strange reason no one has an answer, we'll find one for you.

Take care and I hope you start to feel better really soon.

Hugs,
Barbara

BFogg:

You're welcome, I responded to your other post. I'm very worried about you and I hope that you'll consider seeing a Doctor today. I'm very worried that something serious is happening and you need to be seen ASAP.

I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking about you and praying for you. I hope you're asleep as it's 2:45 am on the East Coast. I think I might head to bed now, I'll check in when I get up and see if there's any news.

Hugs,
Barbara

Bfogg, when I had those pains it was my gallbladder as well. I had a stone blocking the duct to my pancreas. By the time I was in for surgery my gallbladder was so swollen and full that I was very lucky it did not burst. The surgeon had to empty it before he could remove it laparoscopically. I almost ended up with the old gallbladder incision of like 6 inches. Luckily I had a wonderful surgeon.

I don't mean to cause you too much fear but instead stress the importance of getting this checked on as soon as possible. Any severe pain needs to be checked.

At the same time I was having this trouble with my gallbladder I ended up having endocarditis as well which is an inflammation around the heart due to infection in my case. I was pumped full of antibiotics so that they could do the surgery and this was with a normal EKG And no obvious signs on chest x ray. They diagnosed me from my symptoms, bloodwork and the fact that I had these little blood spots under my fingernails.

Honest to goodness when I woke up in recovery I felt better than I had in months!

No messing around! You listen to Barbara and get this taken care of! :)
