Just need a bit of advice please...

Recently I have been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. with the symptoms being quite similar my rheumatologist did blood work too just to make sure. my lupus check came back negative but I still think that the rash over my face is a typical sign of this condition. it is worse in the sun and im not sure if this has anything to do with it but when I come out the shower also. I took photos and showed my rheumy and he agreed it was a light sensitive rash. but he hasn't mentioned lupus again since my bloods came back. ive heard a lot about how one blood test can support the diagnosis and then another time it can show up as negative just like mine !! he said last time that if the rash is still there when I go back then he is going to refer me to a dermatologist... I was wondering are these clued up on lupus also ?

thanks in advance :)

Lupus cannot be diagnosed from a blood test, although some out-of-date rheumies seem to think it can.

It is best to find a rheumy that is associated with your local chapter of www.lupus.org, those are the Drs who are most up-to-date and qualified in Lupus diagnosis and treatment.

On that same website you will find a list of 11 symptoms - Lupus is diagnosed when you have 4 or more of these symptoms and not other illness can be found.

But check out the symptoms of psoriatic arthritis & how it's diagnosed -- seems that I vague recall it may also have a facial rash?? No sure on that.

thanks for your reply...

how do they check for lupus? I did read that it couldn't be determined through a blood test but my specialist nurse said that my rheumy (they work together) had tested for it and the only thing I had that day was x-rays and bloods done ?

from the list which I had looked at before I have fatigue, headaches, painful and swollen joints (how will they tell that apart from the psoriatic arthritis that I have been diagnosed with) :\, butterfly rash across nose and cheeks, sunlight sensitivity, I also have deep muscle pains in the tops of my arms which isn't on the list.

have never heard of a rash with psoriatic arthritis - I have psoriasis in my scalp and sometimes on my elbows and its more like a red/pink patch with like white flaky loose skin on top. my face rash is different.
I also mentioned this to the rheumatologist so I'm guessing if it was linked he would have said so. but hey these rheumatologist aren't always right. there only human after all.

They go through a check list of 11 indicators. If you have at least 4 of the 11 then you probably have lupus.
