I have been getting ulcers on my tongue. Starts out very small with a white halo around it, then just gets bigger....and bigger....and bigger. Thankfully they are THAT painful, but they do get tender sometimes.

Does anyone else have these issues?

Is there any home relief to reduce their occurrence, severity, or duration?

I have been gargling with baking soda + warm water and it seems to provide some relief. They usually resolve themselves in a 7-10 days, but I have a big one going on now.

Are these a sign of more active disease?

Would really appreciate some advice from others with more experience with this as I am new to this wonderful world of mixed connective tissue disease/lupus.

It's possible it's connected. Do you have any other issues besides the tongue problem? If you read the first post it has information on symptoms of lupus.

A friend of mine likes to rinse her mouth in rum (no swallowing). She said it hurts at first, but goes numb. She does it every six hours. She claims it really helps her.

Hi sorry to hear that you are having issues with ulcers. They certainly are no fun at all.

I get them all the time in my mouth, on the roof of the mouth, my inside cheeks, tongue, and along my gum lines. My Doctor usually provides me a prescription for valtrex and it usually helps clear stuff up. I also use soda water rinses. This summer I had a fever blister on my lip, the first in like 5 years. It was so bad that my lip now has a permanent scar on it now.

I'd suggest you give your Doctor a call and see if they will give you a rinse or something to help with it. My tongue is currently raw (like it's been thru a meat grinder) but it's not from my lupus, but from the amount of Methotrexate I'm taking at the moment. I was given a saliva replacement medication to help with that from the oncologist.

As for the correlation between ulcer ans disease activity it depends on the person. I do know that there are times when I have ulcer and I don't feel as if I'm in a terrible flare up We all vary from body to body. I hope you can get rid of your ulcer quickly and that you start to feel better really soon. Welcome to the forum, sorry you need it but you'll really find everyone very helpful.

Take care and let us know how this week goes and if the ulcer gets better.

Lysine has been a HUGE help to me with mouth ulcers. When I get them they multiply to 20+ at a time on my tongue, cheek, roof of my mouth, and tonsils. The lysine takes a day or two to kick in so I find a good temporary solution is Zilactin B, and gargling with salt water and also hydrogen peroxide (separate gargles and do not swallow!). Hope that helps!
