Hi everyone. I was referred here by a friend who also suffers an auto immune disease.
In March I went to the dr for a check up and expressed my extreme exhaustion (among other issues). She ran my panels. All was well except for my ANA, which was positive at 1:640, speckled pattern.
I was sent to a rheum. Which took months. In Aug, she ran more tests. Another positive ANA and low complement protein. At her visits, she never examines anything or truly listens. I also have raynauds, hair loss, brain fog, mouth sores, bowel issues, prone to UTIs, puffy eyes at night and in morning, don't clot well, etc. I emailed her after our visit and she left me clueless, with no relief. She started me on a one day a dose of hydroxychloroquine. She ran more tests this last week. My white blood count was low at 3.54, BUN was low at 5.9, Albumin was high at 5.1, Albumin/Globulin Ratio was off at 2.2.
She again has no concern with these results and I do not see her again until Jan.
At this point, she has hinted to lupus, given me a small dose of meds. But no real diagnosis or relief. What is your take on this? Does it seem like lupus or another autoimmune disorder, or nothing at all? Should I get a second opinion from a new rheum?
Thanks so much, everyone! It's so overwhelming!

So you have seen a rheumotologist, who has prescribed you a daily dose of hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) 200 mg? 400 mg? and scheduled a followup in one month?

Lupus is notoriously difficult to diagnosis, and often Lupus patients are treated for quite some time before an official diagnosis can be made. So no diagnosis is not unusual, and not a big deal.

Your rheumy is starting you on the normal meds usually used initially - Plaquenil 200 mg increasing within a few weeks to 400 mg. Have you been on this long or is it just now being prescribed in Dec? How many times have you seen the rheumy before getting the meds?

Unfortunately with Lupus there isn't that much for the rheumy to "examine" (ie hair loss, brain fog, mouth sores, bowel issues, prone to UTIs, puffy eyes at night and in morning, don't clot well, etc.).

Be patient & see how you react to the Plaquenil, check out our Fibro 101 thread, and let us know how you are doing.

I have a rheum I see about every 3 months. She has prescribed me a once a day dose 250 mg. Which she started me on 2 months ago. I saw the rheum twice before getting on meds.

For peace of mind for me, does this sound like lupus?

Thanks a lot for the help!

lol. The rheumy isn't willing to say Lupus and you want me to?

It could be, it could be something else, only time will tell. Seeing how you respond to treatment etc is a big part of the diagnostic picture.

Lupus symptoms are often like the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, blood disorders, fibromyalgia, diabetes, thyroid problems, Lyme disease, and a number of heart, lung, muscle, and bone diseases.
