Hey everyone, I have this redness on my face and I was curious to know if this looks like a lupus rash to you? I have been experiencing numberous (so far mild) symptoms over the past 6 months and was wondering if this is a lupus rash? I do have an appointment with a dermatologist... However, that is not for three months. So, I was hoping to get some insight in the meantime.

Note: It's super faint and only shows up when you shine light on it. (IE, use the flash on the camera) I tried to go back and look at old photos (taken with flash) and it appears that this has been there for at least a year. However, since most photos I have before that on my phone don't have a flash, I cant go back before that.

Thanks!

It could be rosacea or other skin condition. A dermatologist seems like a good starting point to me.

You didn't mention your other symptoms but the first step to see if it is lupus is to get an ANA blood test. Almost all (95%) of people with lupus have a high ANA blood test. However, a positive ANA does not necessarily mean you have lupus... Your general practioner can order the ANA test. He/she would probably also order a CBC. If the ANA results are positive, you will most likely be referred to a rheumatologist.

Good luck - I hope it is not lupus!

Looks more like an irritation from a sinus/nasal congestion to me. A lupus malar rash is quite a bit angrier looking than what you have shown.

If you don't have any other symptoms, you might think about trying a mild over-the-counter sinus decongestant when you notice it.

@Kimstph Yes! I have considered the fact that it may very well be rosacea that I just never noticed before the onset of my symptoms since there was no need to notice it. I have had tons of symptoms over the past 6 months. However, my primary ones seem to be joint/muscle aches and pains (knees, ankles, hips), swollen lymph nodes (right side of neck only), diffuse hair loss, mildly purple hands when cold (Not sure if this is Reynauds), red hot hands randomly, and brain fog, just to name a few. However, all tests have come back normal over the past 6 months. (3xCBC, Protein Urine, TSH, ANA, 2xSed, and a few other autoimmune tests I can't think of)

@Lynnwood I thought a Lupus Malar rash was more angry indeed, that's why I am still keeping my options open. However, I do know it is always there, it just needs the right light to be seen, so I don't think a sinus decongestant would help too much. Maybe I am wrong?

Thanks for all the replies! :)

You maybe on the edge of something starting. Have you gotten a second opinion by a rhuematologist? They follow the 11 indicators for diagnosing lupus. You need four of the 11 to have lupus.
Take pictures of swelling, rashes, and skin color changes for the doctor.

I have no visible swelling and all of my rashes appear to be light, so its extremely hard to get a decent picture of them when they are there. Other then my hands, they turn super bright. I have asked for a referral to a rheumy but no doctors around here are willing to give one out without positive blood work.

It may take time. I've had lupus symptoms for at least 6 years but this fall is the first time my ANA came back positive. about 18 months ago my white blood cell count started dropping. I don't know if I've had lupus all along and it is just now showing on blood tests or if I had something else before and am just now getting lupus.

Anyway, my point is... Don't give up. Keep bugging the doctors to get a diagnosis of some kind.

Good luck!
