Sounds like a whopper of a flare.

What is your dose on the predisone? Can you handle weaning?
Predisone makes me want to eat a lot. I have to really be careful with my eating when on it.
Have you tried tramadol? It's a milder pain killer with less side effects.

Prednisone is NOT a painkiller, it treats the inflammation and thus heals toe cause of the pain, so just substituting a painkiller is not the answer.

That said, prednisone does physically make us crave carbs, esp. white carbs like bread and pasta. If you can keep yourself away from the carbs, try to get a little exercise (yes, walking to the mailbox counts), that would help.

Also ask your Dr for suggestions of other treatments. You may need to try Imuran, or Cellcept, or MTX so that you can cut back the prednisone dosage.

The surgery might set you off into a bad flare. Make sure your surgeon is well informed on lupus complications.
