Hello I'm new to group and was hoping I could get some answers. In 2003 I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and as the years went by my symptoms seems to be getting worse. I was severely anemic and was receiving iron infusions. During this time I was having a lot of pain all over especially in my hands, hips, knees and feet. I mentioned this to my hemotologist he ran a few blood test and was told I probably have RA or lupus cause I had a positive Ana. Was given Meloxicam with no relief. A few months ago I noticed I was getting a rash on my cheeks and nose and I was having a lot of pain again thinking it was just the fibromyalgia. Then I started feeling really tired and I just couldn't function went to my physician had blood work done was told I had a positive Ana so she took more blood and was told that I also had a positive Rnp. Told I may have lupus or MCTD and referred to a rheumatologist. I see the rheumatologist tomorrow.

Welcome to the group.
We're here for any support you need. We make great listeners. Although we're not doctors here someone might be familiar with a problem you might have.

The rheumatologist will use a list of 11 indicators developed by the American College of rheumatology. You need to meet 4 of the indicators to be diagnosed with lupus.

Sorry to hear you have to deal with this disease.
The plaquinel will help with the fatigue and inflammation, but will take several weeks to fully kick in. I take Leflunomide also, when it's paired with plaquinel it really helps with the joint swelling.

Thank you. ..I'm kind of relieved to get a name for all of this and to finally get started on something to help me feel better. It's only been a day so it really hasn't sunk in. Is Plaquinel considered a steroid?

No, Plaquenil is NOT a steroid. It was originally an anti-malarial which has been found to slow the progression of Lupus. It is the very first line of defense Drs use once Lupus has been diagnosed.

Generally a steroid, such as Prednisone, is the second line of defense against flares where the immune system is running wild and causing a lot of inflammation.

If the inflammation and other disease symptoms are not controlled quickly by Prednisone, the third line of attack is generally one of three meds, Cellcept, Imuran, or MTX. Some people need to try all 3 of these before finding which one works for them.

After that, there is Benylsta and something else whose name escapes me at the moment.

So lots of option are available! Hope you feel better soon!
