Hoping someone can help me here. This is my first post. For the last 4 months I have been getting hives on my legs and arms- few spots. That come out in sun. They come out fast and leave within an hour, but they usually leave a bruise. When they come out it almost feels like a burning pain , and they dont itch. My derm thinks vasculities or Lupus . I do not have other symptoms other then red irritated face, as I have rosacea , too. Hard to know difference between rosacea and lupus rash..  My recent bloodwork showed positive 1:660 ANA but everything else was good or negative. The anti DNA was neg. I am waiting on histone as I have been taking minoclyine for years for Rosacea which can cause sun sentivity and sometimes even drug induced Lupus.
My questions are , does anyone else get these urticaria looking welts that come and go and leave bruise? What does lupus rash look and feel like?

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Sorry, I don't have any information about hives, but I know some of our members have reported similar issues before. Hopefully they will come along and comment. You description doesn't sound like the Vasculitis I've heard of. Have you seen a rheumy? Is your derm suggesting any treatment?

The differences between Rosacea and Lupus rash: Rosacea responds to treatment, it often has small red pimples and fine lines, and is irregularly shaped. Lupus rash is a smooth red, doesn't respond to Rosacea treatment, and is wolf or butterfly shaped, across the nose & upper cheeks. They both react to heat and hot foods.

Hope that helps some!

Thanks for reply. Not yet . Waiting on my histone results to get better picture . Family doctor is referring me to rheumatologist which could take months. These welts are not typical hives . I assume the biopsy will tell whether it's from lupus or vasculitis . I'm just wondering if other people who have lupus get rashes thar bruise after being in sun??? It's strange to sat the least .

I'm not familiar with histone tests.

Where are you located at? It doesn't usually take months to get to a rheumatologist in the US... but sometimes it helps to call and get on the cancellation list so you can be seen sooner.

Best wishes.

Hi. I am located in Canada. Unfortunatly the waiting list for some specialists can be up to 2 years! The histones I am refering are proteins found in cell nuclei. In people with drug induced lupus antibodies attack these, thats why I am being checked for it, as I have been taking minocylene on and off for years for my Rosacea and apparently, this is one of the drugs that can cause drug induced lupus. Honestly, I dont think I have Lupus, or if I do its very mild at this stage. These welts that come out in the sun, leave within and hour and leave a small bruise dont sound like the type of rash that Lupus patients refer to. I scoured this site and I cannot find anyone else with this issue. I do get heat rash on stomach and back , which seems to be occuring more often. My positive ANA does indicate inflammation.. just not sure what is going on. As for my Rosacea.. I do have redness and visible bumps, that I can typically get under control with minocylene, but I stopped taking that drug since this has started.. UGH.. I hate being in limbo.
This site is great, however as a place to vent and get reinforcement from others suffering with similiar conditions. Thanks for that :)

I found a few posts in the allergies forum about hives that bruise - here is one of them. Maybe a place with others who have ideas?

I was diagnosed in November with SLE, and hives/uticaria is one of my symptoms.

I have found that the more I stick with an autoimmune Paleo diet, the less I get hives.

They used it be horrible! to the point where if something pressed my skin too hard I would break out in hives at that area. It was one of the symptoms that sent me to the Dr searching for answers.
