Has anyone had issues with their menstrual cycles with Lupus? Since I started having the lupus symptoms about a year ago my cycles are completely unpredictable and I can go 10 weeks or longer between them. I used to be a 28 day cycle person or earlier and as of now, my last cycle was 10 weeks ago with no signs of arrival and the one prior was 9 weeks. They are extremely light too which is bizarre, not that I am complaining! I mentioned it to my rheumy and he wasn't sure and also to my PCP who stated it was nothing to worry about. Just wondering if it's lupus or early menopause - I am 45 and do have occasional hot flashes during the day and get night sweats nearly every night. Please share your experiences, I appreciate any feedback on the subject.

Your PCP or your GYN can do blood tests - they check certain hormones to see if you are nearing or starting menopause. That's about the only way I know of to get a hint if menopause is involved or not.

I found hot flashes and night sweats occurred for two reasons 1) Lupus and 2) menopause!!! Impossible to tell them apart! (However, Lupus had no effect on my actual cycle, so those changes are probably menopause related.)

My Lupus was diagnosed when I was 43 and now that I'm 56 anything that happens now is Lupus-only. lol

Are you on prednisone? That may be interfering with your cycle. It's been awhile but I believe I remember that happening.
Take care, Fran

Lynnwood - Thanks for your reply, I didn't realize they could test the hormone levels.

Fran, thanks for the reply as well. I didn't even think about the prednisone which I have been on since July. That would make sense.

Prednisone did NOT affect my cycles...

I do think you should see a GYN and get the blood levels checked and see what is really going on. It could be something gynecological, completely separate from Lupus or medications, and could be serious.

Mrs. Brady, I have had changes in my cycle as well. Of course, it was hinted that I was nearing menopause but it didn't make sense of when the night sweats would happen. I have figured out for me, a week or so before my period decides to start, my entire system goes haywire. A night sweat here and there and more unwanted swelling. It would be nice if my periods were lighter.
Any new med I introduce into my life does throw that part of me off or stress. Stress is my worst and constant enemy.
I had asked about the blood test and my pcp said for me, the changes are more aligned with my small size and the meds. The new rheumy I have realized I was being overdosed on one of my meds and causing a domino effect on the new med I started taking thereby messing up my cycle. I agree with them but I also know that Lupus has messed up my almost predictable cycle. I say almost since I was an athlete and my low body fat I used to have made it possible to have light or no periods some months. I still had the mood changes and puffiness, just no period. I think getting that blood test would help clearing up that wondering for you.
Happy Day!
