So after almost 3 months on methotrexate and folic acid, I have been getting headaches every day and sick every week for a few hours the morning after, my rheumotogist wants to switch to Imuran. Any one use this? What am I in for?

Generally the rheumies use plaquenil and prednisone first.

Then they add one of the 3; Imuran, Cellcept, or MTX(methotrexate). If the first one of these they try doesn't do anything, they move along to the next. There is no rhyme or reason as to which to pick or in which order to try them, I think it's just up to the Dr what s/he prefers.

My Dr started with Imuran - it did nothing for me. No improvements, so side effects, nothing. So then we moved along to Cellcept, which turned out to be my miracle drug - basically put me in remission. Side effect was hair thinning, but since stopping Cellcept it has since come back.

Other people get great results with Imuran, or MTX... it's all just magic! Hope the Imuran works for you!

Thanks. I am so bummed to be switching medicines again. He took me off plaquinal when we switched to other drugs. Now I have to stop the mtx and wait for the lab to review my blood work to make sure I can take Imuran. Right in time for Christmas which I am hosting. I hate to complain especially when I know so many are suffering more than me. I just feel like I am on a rollercoaster but not enjoying the ride. Plus I still don't have an actual diagnosis. Sorry to vent just very sad today.

It's a bit unusual to take you off plaquenil just because you are starting other medications -- but maybe that has to do with you not having a diagnosis.

I understand feeling sad, autoimmune diseases are a horrible roller coaster ride. The hope of starting a new medication, the crash of not having our bodies respond the way we'd been told they might. It's hard and heart-breaking.

Just try to keep doing the next right thing, putting one step in front of the other. Things will get better!

Update on my Rollercoaster ride. Blood work came back and my enzymes are too low. No Imuran. Can see rheumatologist until 1/17 to discuss next steps. He put me on a low dose prednisone for now. Starting to get a little relief after 3 days. Hope it works.
