Hi Everyone,

I am a newbie ! I have Lupus and I started generic Plaquenil and it gave me GI distress. The rheumie is ordering Brand Plaquenil for me to try. I am taking Prednisone taper down to 5mg daily. I may start Methotrexate in a few weeks. I have a few questions for everyone.

What are your experiences with Methotrexate pills vs injections ?

I had a bad case of shingles in Jan 2017. It took the life out of me. The doc wants me to get the Shingles and Pneumonia vaccine before starting Methotrexate. Any comments about the plan ?

Lastly has anyone experienced sleepy leg syndrome. I'm not sure if its the Lupus or sleepy leg or both. I have had a hard time with falling asleep and waking up through the night.

Thanks for any suggestions

Welcome to HW!

Plaquenil sometimes gives us a few days of GI issues when we first start it. Hang in there, that should pass after 5-7 days.

I personally have not taken MTX, so don't have any comments on that.

I have taken vaccines as they've been suggested to me -- usually the rheumy has a pretty good sense of how I'm doing and doesn't suggest vaccines when I'm flaring in some manner. If I was feeling ill at all, I might wait till I was feeling better. And if a Dr other than my rheumy suggests something, I clear it with the rheumy first. (The CDC suggests the Shingles Vaccine and the Pneumonia Vaccine be staggered 4 weeks apart.)

I'm guessing you mean 'Restless Leg Syndrome' - sorry, don't have that either! lol Maybe someone else has a comment on it.

Let us know how things go!

Hi Gram,

I agree with Lynnwood in regards to the plaquenil. I have taken Methotrexate, both pill and injectable form. I did have minimal GI issues while taking MTX. MTX did not work for me I had to move onto Imuran and then Cellcept (still take) and Benlysta. However, my son took Methotrexate for many years and had great results with it in regards to helping his Lupus and RA; his body became used to it and/or his disease progressed and he has now moved onto Imuran. He began in pill form and then moved on to injectable. I do have to tell you that he did have a lot of GI issues as a result of the MTX.

For my son the benefits outweighed the side effects. This would be something you would have to discuss with your doctor and weigh as well.

Best of luck with your treatment.
