Hi, thanks for reading this.

Has anyone taken or is taking Imuran? If so why, how long, and at what dosage? Do you feel that it worked and/or is working? What are your thoughts about it?

I'm new to Lupus and am having my 1st major flare still.

In addition to the prescriptions, I supplement with Ginger, Turmeric, JustOne Multivitamin, FishOil with high Omega 3, Moringa powder (sometimes) and Magnesium (sometimes).

Which ones (vitamins, minerals, and herbs) do you take, if any? Let's discuss what seems to work for you.

Thank you in advance for your response. Any help that you can provide will be appreciated.

My Dr tried Imuran as an immunosuppressant. For me, I never had any side effects. I took it for about 8 months, sorry don't remember the dosage. For me, it never provided any relief from Lupus symptoms - didn't effect my disease at all.

We moved on to Cellcept, which proved to be my miracle drug!

Remember to TELL YOUR DR about any and all supplements or special diets you try. When we don't, we risk having the effects of the supplements confused with the effects of the medications, and it messes with the Dr's plan for studying how we react to the medications.

It's NOT a good idea to take anything that is supposed to "support the immune system". Lupus is already an over-active immune system, it does NOT need support. In fact, the immunosuppresants are there to knock it back down to a normal level. Things that "support the immune system" are doing the OPPOSITE of what the Dr's medications are trying to do.

That said, I do take the supplements recommended by my Drs. For me, that's a multi-vitamin (no iron), Vit D (often low since SLE patients don't tolerate the sun well), Vit B, Fish Oil, and Vit C. All things that measured low in lab tests.

Best wishes,

Thanks for your response. Yes she knows the supplements that I take. Glad Cellcept worked for you and sorry Imuran didn't.

Have you ever reacted negatively to soy or gluten?

I too was on Imuran years ago for about 9 months, I do not remember the dosage. It was not a strong enough immunosuppressant for me and I too had to move onto Cellcept, which I am still on along with Leflunomide. I did not have any side effects from Imuran. My son has been Imuran (not sure of the dose) for about a year to treat his Lupus and RA. He has not experienced any side effects either.

I do take a multivitamin (no iron), omega 3, DHEA and probiotic. I do not start any over the counter vitamins without asking my rheumatologist first because of possible interactions with my medications and disease itself.
Hugs;
Melissa

Thanks for your response Melissa. My Rheumy doesn't support DHEA and I refuse to try it without supervision. Yes she knows about all my vitamins and supplements and was the one to suggest most of them. Glad you found something that works well for you.
