Hi everyone

I am a 33 year old male who was diagnosed with fibro when I was in my mid twenties but now am exhibiting some symptoms of lupus for the past year and a half but being ignorant to the disease I didn't know to tell the doctors these symptoms I just assumed it was fibro I am back in pain management after 4 years because the pain has become so unbearable in this last year I am not a fan of this new doctor he seems to me to be very dismissive and bias to the fact that I am a younger male with unexplainable pain issues but when I asked him if fibro could cause this rash on my nose and face that I've had for the last year and a half he said that it may be lupus and gave me a referral so there a chance he may be helping me after all I was also told I had hypothyroidism in my early twenties but when I was put on synthroid it somehow became hyperactive there are a lot of puzzle pieces here that I am trying to put together so I guess one of my questions is can lupus be a slow progressing disease without a lot of obvious symptoms popping up at the same time or is it an all or nothing kinda thing I don't wanna make a super long post my first time and list every symptom I have or ask a bunch more questions but any experiences or insight would be greatly appreciated

Yes, lupus can arrive slowly. Are you going to visit a rheumatologist? They are the Lupus experts. Please read the 'diagnosing lupus' link at the bottom of this post for the various symptoms of Lupus.

Feel free to ask away!

Yes I am scheduled to see one at the end of February which seems like forever but my aunt works at a hospital and is trying to get me in sooner to someone my cousin goes to I have done a lot of research on the subject I don't know if that is always a good thing in my case a lot of the symptoms are there but I'm trying to keep myself from playing doctor I know it may sound strange to someone who suffers from this disease but I'd just like a concrete diagnosis being a younger man with fibro I feel like I am not always taken seriously and there is so much uncertainty on how to treat it I just feel like I hit a wall any time I talk to a doctor

Where are you located at? If here in the USA, the end of February is too long to wait, you should be able to get an appointment within 4-6 weeks with most rheumatologists. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with wait times in other countries.

Don't try to diagnose yourself. If you go to a Dr and say "elephant", he is only going to think about an elephant. If you say, my tail is skinny and my skin is dry, (that is, list your symptoms) he can think about things and find your TRUE diagnosis. You may not have Lupus! It looks like a lot other things. Even when you read the symptom list something like "raised red rash" -- well, take photos of any rash you might have. Show the Dr - when, where, what duration, what were you doing, etc. There are lots of raised red rashes around that are NOT the lupus rash!

I know how discouraging it is to not feel well and not have a diagnosis. I'd never heard of Lupus when it was first mentioned to me -- but the relief of simply knowing something really was wrong and I wasn't bat crap crazy was such a huge relief I almost didn't care WHAT the diagnosis was -- someone believed something was wrong!! WooHoo!

Between now and then, make notes of any times you feel unwell. How are you feeling, what is the symptom, what have you been doing, does anything seem to alleviate the pain/condition/symptom...all that kind of stuff are clues the Drs use to figure it out.

When you see the rheumy, avoid using words like lupus, fibro, autoimmune.... talk about what your body has been doing, using non-medical terms. Whole body ache, or joint is heavy, sore, and hot -- you get the idea?

Hang in there.

Thanks for the quick reply and advice I need all I can get I'm in northeast ohio I wasn't sure about wait times either but I made the appointment two weeks ago so it would be more like a three month wait my pain management dr the one who made the referral said it was nothing to be in a rush about but it's not his and his families life that's been interrupted for the last 7 years so I can see why he feels that way lol thanks again for all of the advice it's always nice to talk to people that have been in similar situations
