Hi all,
Since I joined the forum awhile ago, my recent flare-up has not gotten any better.  As a result my rheumy put me back on Prednisone (dang!  Haven't been on this stuff since 2002, but at least I can buy it really cheap here in Thailand!).  Although the Pred is helping me feel and move A LOT better, I was wondering if it's okay to exercise (my exercise of choice is running) now that I'm feeling "good" or will it just do more harm to my body?  I don't think I'll be running anytime soon, but I was thinking that when I get back from my trip (August) I'd like to start back running, health permitting of course.  What do you think?

Hi Jen,
If you can do it and your doc gives you the okay, I would say go for it. I can't run anymore unfortunately because it does a number on my joints but I try to walk outside or on the treadmill or get on the epiliptical because there is no shock impact to my joints. I would not overdo it though because it may not creep up on you until days later (I learned the hard way :(

I used to see BAH to excercise when I first got sick because I thought there is no way but it actually does something for me mentally as well as physically. Granted I can't do all the things that I used to do but I'm making an effort :-)

my exercise of choice is weight training. Been doing it for 8 1/2 years and I feel this has been a benefit to my health.
Running is hard on the joints.

I ran before lupus and I have to agree -- if/when you try to go back to it do it REALLY slowly. Like start w/walking every other day for 15 minutes & see how that treats you & build up slowly from there.

I've tried to start back now that I'm feeling some better with not very good results -- you really need to UNDER do it & see how the body reacts before increasing .... when I start w/what I think I can do its always been TOO MUCH!

Good luck,

Jen, I agree with the others. I used to be a runner too and was able to do it in great moderation when I first got sick, but have not been able to do any kind of exercise on a regular basis for the last 2 years. I still dream of running someday again (or at least some very slow jogging).

Let us know how the exercising is going for you. Just don't push it - anytime I push myself I get set WAY back.
