Please pardon this graphic question but I cant seem to get a straight answer.  Currently I have my period and I was scheduled to get my blood and urine tested today.  I have my regular rheumy appt. a week from today.  I was concerned about giving a urine sample with my period but the lab tech said it didnt matter.  I question that because my rheumy was very clear about not doing my 24 hour urine catch with my period and even asked me to wait at least 36-48 hours after my period ended.  I realize a 24 hour urine catch is different than a run of the mill urinalysis but I am conerned.  I asked the tech to make a note on my sample that I was on day 4 of my period and she said it wasnt necessary.  Obviously blood will show up and I want them to know why.  I called my rheumy and didnt hear back yet but I had to give the sample earlier so the results would be in on time for my next appt.
I have googled this question and seem to get mixed answers and wondered if anybody has any experience or a solid answer for me.  At this point all my urinalysis is for is to monitor protein.
Thanks and sorry to be so graphic.

I was told the same thing about the 24 hr urine test. Also, before during just routine urine tests at the doctors office, they always ask if I have my period and then have me wait until it is over. My understanding is that blood can have an effect on the results. I'm glad you called the rheumy about it because she may want you to have it done again when you are done with your period.

Let us know what you find out.

Your period will put blood into the urine sample and the protein levels will look high. Your sample will also have elevated white and red cells that don't belong there. Then it will look like your having kidney issues. Always wait for you period to be over and then wait a couple of days to make sure there is no residual. Or you could end up with a kidney biopsy for nothing. nono

i do a urinalysis everytime i go to the doc, and it never seemed to matter whether or not i was on my period, i think as long as the blood work and the urinalysis is ok then it never seems to be a problem, usually if i am on my period the doc will just to make sure, other then that i have never been told not to do the urinalysis because i was on my period.

Hi Citygirl:

I have chronic blood in my urine. Mine is not cause from menstrual blood, as I have not female plumbing. However, when I last saw my urologist, he indicated that they are able to tell the difference between the two types of blood. They can even tell the difference between white blood cells in the urine as to whether they are a bacteria growing, or vaginal bacteria. I would suggest, when you see you Rheumy, mention that you did the test while you where on your period and that they may be some blood in the urine. If the test is normal except for blood, I'm thinking your Rheumy will over look it. If the test if off, I'd ask him to repeat the test and give you a call.

Good luck to you and I hope this helps.

My urologist does only cath samples to avoid all of this. NOT fun when you have chronic UTIs like I do.

Hope everything turns out okay for you.

Thank you for the replies and information. My rheumy did call me back last night and I let her know. She said from now on we will make my appts. a week later so this wont be an issue again. Seeing as I had skewed results on the 24 hour urine catch she said she wants the most clean urine sample she can get. When I have my appt. next week she will give me another script to get a new urine test next week.
