I am new to the entire lupus dx and trying to learn as much as I can. My labs are trickling back. Can someone tell m e about anti-Ro and anti-La titers being over 500? I read it shows sjogrens but I have NO symptoms of sjogrens and my Rhuemy tells me its a def, for lupus with the clinical eval along with supportive serology. Does this mean I am going to get sjogrens? With titers in the 500's and no symptoms I dont understand all of this.
The other thing is one of m y complement levels were high not low! I see on this board u gu ys have low C's . I do not understand what to make of serology can someone give me a crash course? I am at least comforted by the fact that my rhuemy will not dx any patients without serology indicators that are significant.

Hi Chaya . . . a great web-site for lots of the blood work is

Unfortunately, the levels for the La/Ro blood work is not shown. Its not mentioned in other articles I've read either.

The blood work is tricky and even stumps doctors at times. I know that, even with bloodwork, it can take quite a while for the docs to figure things out.

Maybe some of the others have some good resources for you.

Hi Chaya, I don't know a lot about the anti-Ro and-La, but I also often have a high compliment level instead of a low one. My old rheumy was ignorant enough that she said she didn't know what a high compliment level meant, but that it wasn't related to lupus. I did my own investigation and found out otherwise. Here's a quote I found in a medical article about elevated compliment levels:

"Increased levels of both C3 and C4, in additionto increased concentrations of C-ReactiveProtein, are linked to acute inflammatorydisease and tissue inflammation."

If you want the link to the entire article I can give it to you. I saved it to my computer favorites so I could print it out and take it to docs if I needed to.

I hope this helps some. All of these labs and their meanings can be confusing.

Chaya - I think I am right in that you also have IBD (either Crohn's or UC?), my Complement levels tend to run higher most of the time, but my Rheumy and GI both believe that it is due to my Crohn's never being in remission.

Labs are very confusing and some of mine tend to overlap with have more than one Auto-Immune disease.

I am happy that your dr. is diagnosing you so that you can get the proper meds balance.

Diagnosed with Lupus - April 2002

Hippi mom I would love the entire article!
Kara yes I have IBD-CD type. The Dr. did not want to dx and me told me if my labs came back negative he did not want to see me again lol. He called early Mon. morning before all of my labs were even back! and told me to get to the pharmacy for meds as I had lupus clear cut case. From what I see here on healingwell thats almost unheard of response so I am greatful I didnt need to lose an organ before anyone would pay attention to me. Maybe G-d does care..................
