I've had sores in and around my mouth before, but this time is much worse. The corners of my mouth are split wide open and I have small blisters all over my lips. My mouth is so swollen and bright red, and it hurts so bad. I can barely open it up, eating is out of the question, which doesn't work well when you are 8 months pregnant. So anyone with ANY  ideas as how to go about getting rid of them would be greatly appreciated. And, by the way, I'm 34 weeks now, and feeling pretty good. Doctors say I have to make it to 37 weeks and then I'll be allowed to go into labor. I'm getting so anxious and excited, I can't wait to see him. Well, I'll keep you all posted on the next few weeks, he'll be here before we know it.

First thing is to get the blistering to stop -- are you running any fever? Use whatever your dr has suggested to get the fever gone. Then, the medicated lip ointment, Blistex, is great at eliminating the initial pain (the tingling pain that comes from the nerves that are inflamed & involved in the blistering process). Once the spread of the blisters is controlled, and the pain has been dealt with, it's a matter of supporting the lips & splits while they heal.

The biggest thing you can do for healing is to keep the areas well lubricated -- you can continue to use blistex if you want for this, but for bigger areas and the corners of the lips, I'd switch to plain old vasaline. Keep a thin layer on during the day, and apply LOTS at night, esp at the corners. If the corners scab over during the night, get them moist w/vasaline before talking or opening mouth in the morning -- if you can avoid peeling dry scabs away you'll heal much faster.

I'm sorry you're getting a breakout now -- I know they're not fun at the best of times. I've suffered from fever blisters ever since I was a child -- with the fevers from lupus I've been taking Valtrex daily -- and still managed to get a fever blisters just last week!

Best wishes for speedy healing,

Thanks for the advice Lynn, I really do appreciate it. I've been trying to keep them lubricated, as well as I can, and noticed a mild improvement last nite, but definately not clear yet. I do have a fever, around 101, but know my temp is up anyway from being pregnant, but this is high for me, since I'm a constant 97.6. And I've noticed that my throat has begun to hurt, very irritated and scratchy. Now I wonder if it's not lupus at all, but a cold of some sort. Or if the blisters spread to my throat causing the pain. I have a ob/gyn appt on thursday and figured I would just ask then. Again thanks for the advice.

Hi Erin . . . I sure don't know much about lip sores . . .but wanted to send you a hug. Lynnwood's advice sound very appropriate . . . I would add that we use fresh Aloe on burns and such and improvement has been immediate. Dear daughter came over with a huge burn on her wrist from reaching in the dishwasher and I broke and Aloe leaf and squirted the gel on there we couldn't believe how much better it looked in just 20 minutes. It soaked in and she re-applied it about 3 times while she was here and took the plant home with her. I have been amazed by the results many times . . . but the store-bought stuff does little more than moisturize.

I hope Lynnwood's treatment brings you back to normal fast.

Yes, Aloe is excellent.  Also, I've heard that diaper ointment is good too!  My mom uses that for her mouth sores and swear by it.  Hey! It's a good excuse to stock up on a bunch!  You're going to need it in 3 weeks anyway!!!  WOO HOO!!  Congratulations!

Hi Erin,

I hope your mouth is a bit better today. Those blisters can be awful. The others had some good advice for you. I use to get them alot but haven't in awhile. I take folic acid everyday and it has stopped the sores in the mouth and nose and blisters on the lips. Hope you get some relief quickly. Take care and keep us updated. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Erin.  My dermatologist has me use diaper ointment at night.  It is especially good for the sores at the corner of my mouth.  So, another vote for zinc oxide diaper ointment.  I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Erin, I just wanted to say good luck at your doctor appt today. I hope you are feeling better or he gives you somthing to help improve the sores in your mouth. It sounds just awful! I've got a couple of sores right now on the inside of my upper lip. I wear dentures and I had to take them out because it was so painful. But compared to your I really can't complain. Let us know how your appt goes today.
God Bless
