Today I had my 2nd visit to the LLMD and got my blood test results back.  I tested positive for lyme from Igenex which I already knew and have been getting treated w/doxy now for over a month.. I also tested positive for Babesia.. However, my Dr said she isn't going to treat me for that yet, and is going to wait a month until my next apt. to treat it.. She said its a mild case according to the blood test titer, and that the high dose of doxy I was previously on (currently building back up to it) might have treated it somewhat also... I just don't understand why she wouldn't want to treat it right away and at the same time as the lyme.. any ideas?

i also tested positive for babesia with a mild titer- but my llmd said that babesia often doesn't show up in bloodwork, so the fact that i tested positive was significant. i was given mepron along with zithromax and plaquenel initially for the babesia when coinfection testing came back(but i wasn't testsed for coinfections until 5 months into having lyme). my understanding is that babesia is treated with antimalarials. can doxy treat babesia? i don't know why your lllmd isn't treating it yet. maybe since you're building up to a higher dose of doxy, she's waiting for you to get back up on that before adding antimalarials?

Hi hezzer926.  Do you have copies of your test results?  It is always good to get them.

What dose of Doxy are you taking?

Babesiosis is simliar to malaria.  It needs to be treated with an anti-malarial (often Mepron) together with certain antibiotics (Zithromax, Biaxin, or Ketek).  I have not heard of Doxy being used to treat it.

I do have copies of my test results... and I do indeed have babesiosis...Can it get worse when not treated? I don't understand when she knows I have it why we would wait a month.. Do people not use doxy, along with the anti malarials to treat it?
