Hi All -

I've been taking 500MG of Amoxicillin 3x/day for 2 weeks now. For the most part my symptoms have improved greatly. The 1st week I felt like a train hit me and slowly my energy level is back up, the muscle and joint swelling has gone away, and insomnia gotten better. What has showed it's ugly face is a vaginal yeast infection. I've been taking probiotics 1 to 2 times a day but it still didn't prevent it. My doc prescribed 1 pill of Diflucan and I took it on Sunday. It helped a little but this morning the horrendous burning and itching came back in full force.

Any tips on getting rid of this while on Antibiotics? cry

Hi virginialady76.  Are you taking high-quality acidophilus?  The best ones to get are refrigerated and have a high culture count.  You may need to take more than you are.  Let your doctor know you are still having problems.

Are you seeing a Lyme doctor?  From what I understand, 3000 mg is the minimum recommended dose of Amoxicilin for Lyme.

One diflucan pill sometimes will not take care of a yeast infection if you are on long term abx. If your doctor will not prescribe more, you can use the over the counter cream. I would also recommend taking an herbal antifungal like oil of oregano, grapefruitseed extract or garlic. There are many others as well.

Sorry you are having to deal with this. It's crazy the stuff we have to put up with!!!

I was surprised that no one mentioned caprylic acid for candida. That is what they used at the clinic I was going to. If you google it, it is  anti-fungal AND anti-bacterial. It is derived from coconuts and palm oil. Whole Foods sells an organic coconut oil and it is great, also use it as a cream for my skin. Besides eating it ,you could also rub it on your infection and it helps the burning and itiching. I have used it in my bath water as well. Best thing about it is its completely harmless and smells nice.  Good luck-

You can also put yogurt directly on the infection. Some also recommend a raw garlic clove pushed into the vagina. It sounds gross, but apparently it works...

funny..one Pill of dyflucan? Your kidding right? Um....you need to take it twice a day for 2-4 weeks.
And be careful with it. I don't know why, but it made my heart race at the time. So see how it effects you first.
Our family all got lyme in 2004. It has been a long battle. But all is well now with my children. Feb 8 TH of 2009 is when I left Envita. And I am celebrating a year of perfect health.

When I did the German's treatment for my lyme over there. He would have us do 30 cycles of the anx and then give us a 30 day break. And on the break we would tale dyful. twice a day for 30 days.
Heavy abx use can give you serious nuerological problems and also give you bloody stools along with dementia.
The bad thing about just doing the heavy abx is that you start to feel better...some, but then when you stop them, in about a week or so, everything starts all over again.

Chances are excellent everyone who has been on antibiotics has yeast overgrowth. Google "candida" and you might be surprised to see how many of the symptoms are the same as Lyme symptoms. And antibiotics cause candida.

Antifungal tannins also can reduce yeast in the gut...I used to take something called Tanalbit for this.

I have been off & on abx for about a year but haven't had any yeast problems yet. I take a chewable probiotic and that seems to do the trick for me...

I would get yeast infections ALL the time. Cronic for 30 years for me and any sugar binges would kick it in. They are
sexually transmitted which the drs don't bother to tell you. If you are active make sure your partner is treated too.
Acidephollis is good but I finally found something that works Great!!! It's a tincture called USNEA. You can find it at an
herbal shop and is the only thing I can't find in pill form. It's fermented tree lichen and works on yeast infections and
trich infections and doesn't have the side effects Diflucan has. Even my trich infection was gone in about a week on this
and every time I feel a yeast problem coming on I go on it.

Dyfulcan will get rid of the probelm in 2 weeks flat. But if you continue to take huge amounts of abx, that will give you a yeast infection again.

Boric acid suppositories work really well. Go to a drug store, buy boric acid (it's cheap-fine white powder.) Then go to a vitamin shop and ask for 00 capsules. Fill them up, insert 1 a night for 3 days. *Be careful to wash your hands well after filling the capsules...boric acid is toxic if ingested.

Mainstream Dr's also recommend boric acid..it kills other types of yeast besides candida albicans. Diflucan doesn't.

Hi.  I've been fighting yeast, too, only I get it on my tongue.  Twice daily, on an empty stomach, I take a probiotic that contains acidopholus and other "friendly bacteria" in addition to a "friendly yeast" pill and a prebiotic that makes the intestinal environment conducive to growth of the good stuff I'm taking.  I am on a low carbohydrate diet, NEVER eat sugar (not even fruit) or refined starches or any type of fungus or yeast and nothing fermented (alcohol, vinegar).  Still I got yeast.  My LLMD prescribed ongoing Nystatin but that was pretty much useless.  What finally worked was 4 diflucan pills, one every third day.  Now I have a refill for when I need it.  I'm also taking a holistic anti fungal capsule (that smells like Windex).  Maybe that is helping, too.  Good luck getting rid of the yeast.

That really is interesting, you really do need to take it everyday for a period of time to get rid of a yeast infection caused by antibiotics when treating lyme. I also noticed (I have PCOS) and get painful boils in the private areas...when I was on the IV antibiotic, I did not get any bumps or boils, when the IV was done, boils came back.

Good Luck!!

I never struggled with yeast infections until I had Lyme Disease and all those antibiotics. Although I've been off antibiotics for a year, I still have had yeast problems.

Like many of us--I've watched my diet, taken probiotics, the usual stuff, yet still struggled.

Recently I began a product called Yeast Ease TM (Trade Mark) Jernigan Nutraceuticals Herbal Dietary Formula. It works for me. Here is the link for more information.

WOW one pill of diflucan usually works for me. I can't believe the doctor would make you take it 2-4 weeks??  WOW... each pill cost me

$8.00.  WOW.. I have a yeast infection now but I am also having problems with my  stool. I am wondering if it's going hand to hand. :(

I swear I never get a break either..  Plus, I think the yeast infection gave me a bladder infection. I'm gonna take a test shortly...

When it rains it pours..

pepphell, i do believe there is a test for yeast infections but the symptoms alone will speak for themselves. if it is a vaginal yeast infection, it will produce yucky white stuff alon with severe itching and burning.

I was on diflucan for 30 days to get the yeast under control. I also take a lot of good probotics that are kept in the refrigerator. I also took an anti-fungal Amazon A-F.

Keep the area dry. Sounds weird, but dry the area with hair dryer before putting pants on. Sleep panty free at night and let the air flow! Sorry if this sounds too personal!

How do you know you have a yeast infection? Vaginal itching, can be intense. May have discharge and the area can be swollen.

You can have a yeast infection other places too - just in case someone doesn't know.

I have had a yeast infection in my intestines and colon/rectal area.  Bloating and cramping in my stomach area and burning, itching and fisures in the rectal area are symptoms of yeast infection.

If they aren't handled quickly, they can really get out of control!  I am doing the probiotics in the frig too, twice a day at least 3 hours away from taking antibiotics.  Plus I'm taking Nystatin twice a day.  I'm not getting better yet, but I'm not getting worse!
