I am on 400mg/Doxy per day. I am pretty sure I now have a yeast infection. Can I use an over the counter yeast infection kit - it is okay to use it when on Doxy?

Hi baileygirl76.  It should be okay to use the kit, but I would check with a pharmacist or your doctor to make sure.

Are you taking high-quality acidophilus capsules at least two hours apart from the antibiotics?  This helps prevent yeast overgrowth.

No, I eat a lot of yogurt but apparently that is not enough.

I recommend getting high-quality acidophilus.  The best ones to get are refrigerated and have a high culture count (such as 10 billion per capsule).  Make sure you take them at least two hours apart from the antibiotics.

Although initially sucessful in eliminating my thrush and yeast infections with perscriptions, I ultimately reacted badly to both Diflucan based anti-fungals and Nystatin by building up bad enzymes in my liver. After researching non-perscription options this is what I found and have tried most of them.

Diet - Eliminate all sugar and yeast from your diet (including vinegar and related foods which have a lot of yeast)

Probiotic bacteria (I like the type you have to refrigerate that have 8 strains of bacteria for best diversity of flora)

The following supplements are in no particular order
Undecenoic Acid (from castor oil Thorne sells it as SF722)
Caprylic Acid (will give small pinsized intestinal cramps)
Chlorella (get high quality with lowest impurities)
Omega 3 (Their are many sources, I use Flax Seed Oil)
Garlic (one good brand is Allimax)
Grapefruit Seed Extract
Oil of Oregano
Olive Leaf Extract (also fights bacteria infections so will support eliminating Lyme and Bartonella)
Pau D'Arco (can also buy the Tea [I found it at vitamin shoppe] and gargle with the tea)
Cats Claw

My LLMD put me on Difflucan once a day. I think its 100mg. I had an extreme yeast overgrowth, most lymies do.

I used an OTC kit from Walgreens and it did the trick. Yay! Yeast infections just suck! Anyway, I just started taking a probiotic today.

I read in another post that these two are not okay to be taken with antibiotics?

Hi there Flowerpoddess,

I, too, read that it's not OK to take Olive Leaf Extract while on certain medications...but I can't recall which and I can't recall where I read that...duh! All I remember is that my Aunt recommended it to me, and I stumbled upon something online that lead me to believe taking Olive Leaf Extract would not be good with the abx combo I was on -- Biaxin + Flagyl.

Anyway, I am also battling vaginal yeast infections. After I had about 7 infections in 6 months, my doctor Rx'd Fluconazole 150 mg daily for 7 days. It worked amazingly well, and I was infection-free for three months. Right now, I'm on another 7 day-round of Fluconazole. My doctor said if the infection comes back, we'll have to do a swab.

It's just an added aggravation dealing with a yeast infection, while battling Lyme, too. I hope someone comes along and sets us straight about Olive Leaf Extract and Oil of Oregano.

Take good care,
Carrie
