I've heared many of times; from my doctor, and others that Lyme and Syphilis are cousins. Maybe I'm wrong; but I'm under the belief that a simple blood test is all thats needed to confirm someone has syphilis. So if the two are so closely related, then why is Lyme so hard to diagnose? Or are the test for Syphilis just as bad?

Syphilis has 22 genes; Lyme has over 100. The complexity of the Bb organism contributes to the tests being less accurate. Also, MD's are more well-educated about Siphilis, thus less diagnostic bias.

This is a very old thread , but I wanted to say that I have wondered the same thing ,because my symptoms matched syphillis , enough so that I demanded a syphillis test !
