Can anyone tell me if they have had any luck with United Health Care insurance covering costs for testing and treating lyme?  I am just starting this journey and am wondering what to expect financially.  Thank you for any information that may be helpful.

Hi MDgirl,

Most of the time payment issues are with IV antibiotic treatment and not oral treatment. Nonpayment may also correlate with how well defined your lyme tests turn out.

I recently asked this question as open enrollment just passed and a member was kind enough to tell me they only paid for 1 or 2 months of IV treatment, but they did cover all the ancillary costs like the change of dressing and the PICC line maintenance. The best thing to do is call them and ask.

I don't have UH.  I have Blue Cross Blue Shield.  I was deciding if I should switch to UH during open enrollment.  I decided to stick with BCBS.  I apologize I cannot be of more help.

I have UHC and they didn't have any problems covering any of the blood test ordered except the CD57 which they wouldn't cover calling it experimental.  I haven't done IV only oral meds, so I can't comment on that.  I have a $4000 deductible so it's all out of pocket anyway, but if it's experimental it doesn't go towards your deductible.  I did have a pos WB thru LabCorp, so I don't know if that would make a difference with what they would cover.

bcbs-mi gave me no problems covering anything and everything after the deductible. I did IV Rocephin - worked wonders when combined with vitamines, herbs and a diet change deleting sugar, caffeine and alcohol. A reduction in starch helped too.

I have bcbs KC, but it took getting into an ID MD here who actually believes in chronci lyme to get approved for iv rocephin - that and my spect scans
