Biaxin--Anyone have tinnitus or hearing loss?

Many are using the Biaxin/Plaquenil combo for Fry's PBR bug. Biaxin is a drug that can cause ototoxicity. I was wondering if anyone has experienced increased ringing in their ears, ringing that started for the first time or if they had high frequency hearing loss? If so, when you stopped the drug did it eventually go away and over how much time? Thank you.

Hi Ifinva.  I have not had this happen, but I know of people who had this problem with Zithromax (which I believe is in the same class as Biaxin).  A friend of mine had this happen with Zithromax and her hearing did return to normal, but I am not sure how long it was after stopping the med.

I began to have ear ringing when I first got severe symptoms from lyme and babesia 6 years ago. The ringing was so bad that I got rid of a perfectly good TV set thinking it was coming from that! The antibiotics at first made it a lot less but as time went on the mepron, zithromax and other meds brought it back. However it is not nearly as bad as when I was at my worst and mostly it is only in ONE ear! Every now and then it gets very loud but then subsides. I am still being treated. I had extreme noise sensitivity a few years back but then was treated for babesia and it got alot less. Haven't had any hearing loss yet that I know of. My eyes were affected much more. Blessings

Thank you all for replying. Let me know how your treatment goes with the B/P combo. It seems to be very popular recently. The PBR is short for Fry labs newly named bug. Proteo Bacter Rheumitica. No test for it yet, but Fry is saying that people who supposedly he told had the hemobart/mycoplasma is really this bug. Until he has a paper out and a commercial test, I'm reserving judgment.

I want to add my thoughts on this. It actually could be from the plaquinel. This drug is an anti-malarial catagory just like qualiquin (sp?). It's Hydroxychloroquin (plaq) and there's chloroquin and then there's also primaquin and then qualiquin. All the same type of drug some just stronger than others. And I believe qualiquin has a side effect of ears ringing. So I don't know why they all couldn't. But google it and do your own research. Cause right now I'm going on what I thought I read. This is something to look into I think. Good luck.

I have been on Baxin/Plaq combo for the better part of the last two years. I recently saw an ENT for swallowing problems. While there he also gave me a hearing test which noted I definitely had hearing loss in my right ear. I also have balance/vertigo that luckily is not as bad as it was two years ago when I first got my Lyme Clinical diagnosis.

The deafness and occassional ringing in ears may be from 35 years of doing lighting and sound for Rock bands, as well as sometimes playing in the bands. Or it could be Biaxin/Plaq related. Or a combination of both.

The one time I went off antibiotics, including the Biaxin/Plaq combo I got very sick.

I took Biaxin for the first time on Thursday, 2/28/14 and on Friday morning, 2/28/14, a day later, I woke up with tinnitus in my left ear. Today is now 4/3/14 and it has not gone away. I went to see an ENT this morning and he confirmed that Biaxin does in in fact cause this but it's suppose to be temporary. He said in some odd cases, it may not go away but it should not effect my hearing. I had a hearing text done with morning as well and my hearing is fine.

Early on when tinnitus would start I blamed it on medicine I was taking, after off the med a month or so tinnitus would stop. Then Jan 2009 it came back and has been a constant torture. Also at times extreme sensitive to sounds, sounds like lousy cracking sounds and feel ear drum moving, it is painful and have to remove myself from the source of the sound(had to stop going to church because of it, could no longer be in worship or the sermon).

This last part comes and goes but the tinnitus appears to be permanent. Also have some hearing loss, balance issues at times, pressure builds up an pops (like when you go up in an air plane), also have trouble figuring where sounds are coming from, very dissenting..
