I had to have my picc line pulled after 6 months due to arm pain. nono I am taking a break from abx. for a few days to see where i'm at.

My doc. gave a prescription for bicillan shots.

I would get one a week.

If you have tried bicillin shots please let me know if it helped or not.

Thanks a bunch! smilewinkgrin

Hi georgiagirl- I did bicillin shots after I went off Rocephin last spring. They kept me stable but I had no  further improvement on them. My doctor said I had to do at least 2 but he preferred 3 times a week. I did them for 3 1/2 months 3X weekly but stopped when we decided they weren't going to help. I think they are definately worth trying..

Thanks Kim. How bad did the shots hurt? Who gave you the shots? My husband will give me mine. I threaten him and tell him that he better not hurt me, he just smiles.  smhair   nono

Hi georgiagirl- I used lidocaine cream and I also iced the area before the injection. They didn't hurt at all. My husband gave them to me but he did it VERY slowly. He took almost 2-3 minutes to inject it and talk to me while doing that. I think that made a huge difference. I wouldn't do them without the cream or icing it beforehand. Another thing was that I never looked at the needle cause I didn't want to scare myself. Even now that I don't do them anymore I never looked at it!  Make sure you walk around afterwards so the medication will distribute. I would walk around for 30 minutes. Good luck with them. If you have any other questions just ask okay..

I will get the lidocaine cream. Is it over the counter? Was your husband nervous? Who showed him how to do it?

You need a prescription for the lidocaine. There is also a cream called emla that is the same thing. My husband read on the internet how to give the injection. There is a site that details exactly how to do it and how to prep for it. He was very nervous with the first one but when I didn't scream he felt much better.

I think you just have to google "how to give a bicillin shot" and it will come up on the listings. If you can't find it let me know and I will help.

Thanks for the link - useful video!

I do all necessary injections by myself; it always hurts me when somebody else is doing it, I cannot really relax.

I only can recommend to learn it, it is easy!!! go for the thigh /vastus lateralis then (many peadiatricians use this place too because it does not hurt); when sitting comfortable on a chair, the muscle is even more relaxed; if you follow the video instruction you will not even feel it !!!! Honestly; even my very very anxious husband when it comes to injections has learned it in the meanwhile. Good luck!! dorit

What is the average number of shots every week. My ID doc. is only prescribing me one a week. Is that enough? Do they go by your weight? I only weigh 103 lbs. Could that be why?

Chris L and dorit, are the sots helping you? What are you taking along with them? Thanks

Hi georgiagirl;

I did not take bicillin shots so I am not of help to answer your question. Sorry for that!

But I learned doing injections by myself. It was easy and it reduced stess a lot - i.e.when I had to take MANY shots for desensitization after I ended up in ER after a wasp bite. Its a positive feeling to be able to do this, kind of being of help for myself - something like this I guess.

Good luck with your treatment!! I will keep my fingers crossed that it helps you!! dorit

I was prescribed IM Bicillin after finishing six weeks of IV Rocephin.  I felt the Bicillin helped me a lot with my balance issues.  (Recently diagnosed with a new cervical lesion on my brain MRI).  I tried to never plan anything for the next day, as I usually didn't feel very well.  (This did improve the longer I was on the medication.)  I took the shots 2x/wk, Mondays and Thursdays for about 5-6 months.  My husband gave them to me after being instructed by the home nurse who oversaw my IV Rocephin.  I iced the area first, as well as "rolled" the medication (rolling the medication in the palms of my hands).  I found if I didn't roll it first, it seemed to go in with more difficulty.  Honestly, sometimes the shots hurt and other times they didn't.  Couldn't seem to figure out why, though.  I tried to add the Lidocaine cream, but that seemed to make the pain of the shots much worse and discontinued after two applications.  The "stick" of the needle never hurt, but about halfway through, the medication could hurt.  We never took 2-3 minutes to inject, and that would make sense to me that injecting slowly would be better than just trying to hurry up get it over with!  I was very nervous about doing this, but my husband was so helpful that it made a big difference.  (If the shot did hurt enough to make me cry, I tried to go in another room so I wouldn't make him feel bad!)  Good luck on your new regimen, and let us know how you make out.

Lymefrustration, Georgiagirl, ktp812,

I am trying to find out about the units in your injections. Do you what it was? If you were taking two or three shots a week was it 750,000units or 1,200,000units? (I read that for syphilis they use a dosage of 2,400,000.) I know we have all been under pretty aggressive treatment for lyme and co-infections and I am wondering why some doctors only want one shot and others want two or three. I thought maybe it had to do with the dosage so that is why I ask about the units.

Thanks, Take care,
bcaring

bcaring-I posted on the other topic. But in case you see this one first. I was injecting 1,200,000 3X weekly. They started me at two and then I went up to three. I just know that Dr. H said it had to be done at least 2 but he preferred 3 times a week to keep the level high. Hope this helps..

I can't find my dosage--we're remodeling and I can't find the box I stored this information in! I will keep looking and let you know when (if!) I find it.
