"The research proposal involves testing a newly discovered mechanism in which bacterial infection with the pathogen, Borrelia Borgdorferi, first activates an inflammatory response followed by a focused and more specific immune response. In previous studies the Viral Genetics model, discovered and unravelled by Dr Newell, suggests that the acute inflammation that is typical of initial infection with the bacteria should be helpful in resolving the disease. However, in some people (determined by their specific genetic makeup), the inability to dampen the inflammation and convert the immune response to a more focused, specific immune response may result in chronic ongoing symptoms characterized by the chronic "hyper-immune" activation.

Failure to control the initial inflammation in what should have been a temporary "innate" response turns into a chronic and spreading syndrome. The Newell model reconciles both the initial acute disease as Borrelia Burgdorferi mediated, and accounts for the immunologically-driven consequent processes that appear pathologically similar to outright autoimmune disease."

My doctor has been telling me that it is this inflammation and chronic activation of the innate immune system that causes most symptoms.

Great article Kitty.  I don't recall the specifics, but Dr. S in MD uses HLA genotype to determine susceptibility to illness including lyme.  Wonder if this CA group is using his work?

BTW, how are your treatments going?

I am in Maryland as well, but not seeing Dr. S.

I am having trouble adjusting to the minocycline. My main symptom is dizziness and the mino causes the same type of dizzy, except increased.

I am taking this month to see if I can handle any dose every other day. Even the lowest- 50 mg- causes increased dizziness.

The good news is that if I am off for a few days, I feel much better, so I surmise that even this low dose (was initially 50 mg/day, then 100 every other) may have helped me. I did herx about 2 weeks in on this low dose. I have had Lyme untreated for nearly 15 years- bulls eye rash and all...

So... it is likely back to the drawing board for a suitable antibiotic. Doctor mentioned Biaxnin and plaquenil.

Have you made any progress towards a diagnosis? I just looked back at the older post and that we talked about the TGF b1 levels.

Thanks for responding. Take care.
