I was 1st treated for lyme 10 years ago for a month. I just started treatment again. for the last 8 months I was on Tetracycline 1500mg a day.I  saw little improvement. The past week I feel like Iam starting to back slide. More scary brain symptoms. Anyway i went to my LLMD and he changed my meds to Ceftin 500mg 3times a day. He wants to just treat me with Fluconazole, but I was not sure if that is enough. I was just wondering if anyone is taking that alone and if so are you seeing improvment.

There was a study done by a German physician Dr. Fritz Schardz who had lyme and treated himself with I believe, minocycline and then diflucan. If you google his name you will find an article. There was a period where a few doctors were advocating treating with just diflucan. Who brought up Ceftin? You or the physician? In my opinion, if you have lyme, then diflucan alone is not enough to treat it.

It can certainly help with yeast issues and if you have systemic yeast then those symptoms can mimic lyme. Those who are on long term antibiotics may end up with yeast infections and diflucan may be prescribed.

Martha's Vineyard - a woman who posts on the forum visited the doctor in Germany. You could ask her if she felt the experience was worthwhile. However, again, if you have lyme then you need more than diflucan.

Yes I know about the study that was done. I do not have any yeast problems. He just belives that Fluconazol can treat lyme by it self. He brought up Ceftin. I do not have health insurance so I can not afford some of the meds. Plus I was not sure if I wanted to take fluconazol it did not seem like enough to me

I suspect that your doctor is in Chester County. If so, then I went to Dr. F for a while so I do know about the belief that diflucan ALONG with a strict diet is something that he believes in.

I know insurance is an issue but were you tested for lyme or any co-infections? Again, you can try the diflucan for a couple of weeks but if your symptoms are significant then it is not sufficient. Just my opinion.

Another thought,

Do you feel comfortable ordering your own meds? There are some here who do it because of cost reasons, inability to see an llmd, fee they are not being treated properly (you must be very informed about lyme, co-infections, and the correct combinations of medication). I am not advocating that you go this route but some do. Just a thought.

I did 60 days of 200mg Diflucan, after being on other orals for 1.5 yrs.

I felt the BEST during those 60 days.  That ended in Dec., and I am now having some problems again.

When I see my LLMD in April, I am going to request another 60 days and see what happens this time.

I also had a terrible ITCH that I have had for 5+ years (sorry if this is TMI).  I was all clear on any vaginal infections, and it was all external..I guess you could say what I would consider "men's jock itch".

Boom...went way (HEAVEN) after 30 days on the Diflucan...now it is back again and I am miserable! smhair

1bitten-have you tried oil of oregano? That is a good anti-fungal.

bcaring, yes my dr. is in chester county. I have had a positive lyme test but have not been tested for co infections. I do seem to have symptoms of bart. Iam starting my strict diet today, and Iam going to try Cephalexin. I am still thinking bout fluconazol. 1bitten2xshy It is good to hear that you did well with fluconazol. I hope you can get back on it so you feel better. Iam still going to look into it. I will go back to the doctor in a couple of months then maybe I will try it.

Hi not again,

Maybe you could take the antibiotic and the anti-fungal at the same time?

1bitten2xshy(great name!) - I'll bet the 200mg helped a lot. I just ended about 14 months of IV a couple of months ago and I have to take Nystatin and 100mg of diflucan every day at this point in addition to the oral antibiotics I am on.

Once Bitten Two Times Shot - was that Arrowsmith?

I think it was White Snake? Great White? SOmething to that effect. I know my daughters listened to it.

Oil of Oregeno was good, until it killed my tummy, no matter how I took it. Still did not do what the Diflucan did.

the fluconal is not taken at the same time as the abx. I went to Dr. Swatz in Wurzburg. He has had great success...with about 70%. But he is now retired. I took the abx and then would take the fluconal. It is a speedy med. oddly. But it is done in intercals with the abx. It did not work for me and I did the 3 mos. trial almost twice. Untile I got so sick that I forgot how to drive my car.
But...it didi work for a friend of mine who had just gotten lyme. I posted all of his meds back in....ummmmmm. April of last year I think and then again recently.
But now alone it is for killing yeast. Which becomes a big problem with tons of abx.
