Hi KeepHope.  I recommend asking your doctor how best to back off the meds.

KH, I was on biaxin/plaq for months without any herx.
Cipro and artemisinin were added, still no herx.
Rifampin, art dose increase, were added........then Herx!!!!

Don't know for sure if it was the rifampin added to the combo or what?
So, my LLMD had me stop the art, cipro and rifampin for a while.

I think meds react very differently with all of us. And it's important to talk to you LLMD about it.

Hi KeepHope, I have been on the Biaxin/Plaquenil for 6 weeks now. I started at 250 mg of Biaxin and slowly built up to taking it daily. I did okay and was actually feeling a little bit better. Then I bumped it up to 500 mg two weeks ago an did not really herx. Then I went to 750 mg just for one day and then back down to 500 mg. Since I did that one day at 750 mg I have been getting progressively worse. I was able to go for short walks and now I cannot. My sleep has gotten very bad and it is impossible to get out of bed in the morning. My lymph nodes have swelled again, muscle pain and headaches returned and lots of dark thoughts. I am being treated for protozoa in my blood. I just dont know if I can do this, I feel so awful. I thought about going back down to 250 mg of biaxin and see if I feel any better, but I know as soon as I go back to 500 mg I will feel like this again. How do you guys cope with this?

I have also been having a lot GI stuff, like IBS + heartburn. Cramping, gas, bloating, constipation with occasional loose watery stools. I think this is herxing but not sure. I take tons of probiotics and Inulin. I was taking garlic but it was making matters worse actually so I stopped it. Think I am going to try some peppermint. I feel very lost and confused for sure. Afraid of what the abxs can do to my gut

I've never had problems with Biaxin/Plaquenil. But like LupnerRN I could not tolerate Rifampin.

I was on Biaxin/plaq for 26 months. It got me well, but the herx's were awful. When it was very bad I would take 3 days off and then start again. Anytime it got unbearable I could stop for a few days and that helped some, but I just had to go through it to get to the other side. It too gave me stomach upset. I always took with food or at least a few pieces of bread and a lot of water and that helped too.
