I have been very stiff lately and do not like taking prescribed relaxer medications.
Any other ideas for this.

Hi KeepHope,

Before my pain got severe, I took, and still take sometimes, a supplement called Muscle Calm. It has Valerian root in it and pretty much relaxes the muscles and takes the edge off. I get it from a nurse where I live that knows everything about supplements. I haven't looked it up online yet and am not sure if you can order it or not but just wanted to let you know.

A friend of mine likes a product called Topricin. I think it can be purchased at any health food/supplement store.

Hi KeepHope ~

I think epsom salt baths are helpful for muscle pain. I think that streching and gentle excecise is helpful too. I recently got a bad burn on my hand and have been using a homeopathic product called Traumeel. It is a cream and on the tube it is recommended for muscle pain.

I would offer Oil of Oregano. If you mix it with a little of olive oil and rub it on your sore muscles it gives a warming effect and has helped with my back pain.

Magnesium is excellent for muscle stiffness and pain.  I've also heard some with Fibromyalgia do well with something called Malic Acid for muscle pain.

Also, make sure you are getting sufficient fluid intake - dehydration will make muscle pain and stiffness worse.

Take care,

manual muscle therapy from my PT - she is only 1 of 2 licensed in PA in this subspecialty.  couldn't have made it so far without her.

I stopped for two weeks and I'm much worse than even before with every toe and wrists and vertebrae pop, pop, pop...

Razzle - How much magnesium do you recommend? I think I'm going to try that.

I also find yoga to be extremely helpful with stiffness. I also do it nearly every morning on my own as I'm watching the news (like right now!). Stretching for a long time really seems to help.

Well, the usual recommendation is to take half as much magnesium as calcium. The maximum recommended calcium intake is 2000mg, which means that magnesium intake would be a max of 1000mg. However, these dosages need to be customized, and it is safe to take more than 1000mg of Magnesium daily. So start with 500mg/day and slowly work your way up until either your muscle soreness seems to be improving or you get diarrhea. If you get diarrhea before your muscle soreness starts going away, back off your dose of magnesium by 250mg increments until no more loose bowels, then stay at the dose you had to go down to daily. I found for me that I needed the magnesium to help with my gut, and also I still got foot cramps if I only did half as much magnesium as calcium, so I was taking 2000mg magnesium (sometimes more) daily when I was able to get the pills down.

I was using a product called Chelated Magnesium made by Country Life (no financial connection, just a happy customer), some like pills/capsules of Magnesium Citrate (good absorption).

I hope this helps - take care,
