my llmd switched my treatment from dorix 200 mg to bactrim the other day.  i hadn't been feeling all that great before the switch..but since the switch ive been downright brutal.  today im starting my first fever in over a month..i hadn't had one since being on the doxy.  anyone get fevers as a result of a herx?  i'd assume its possible but i don't want to let it go if not as i dont see my dr for another month.

when i went on doxy last month i felt quite sick for about 2 weeks, much sicker than usual and then all the sudden for 3 days i felt perfectly normal.  since then its gradually been downhill again.  guess this is the cycling.

Hi Vin,

I see on your list of medicine that you are taking prednisone. Steroids can make you feel a whole lot worse when you have Lyme Disease. It supreses the immune system. Does you Lyme doctor know you are taking this?

Yes he does. I know all about prednisone and its nastiness. i had to take it for chrons/colitis flare up unfortunately and i had no choice. 6mp is also an immunosuppressant. I am off the prednisone as of last wednesday. Made it down from 60 mg! hopefully as my immune system recovers from that stuff i can really fight the lyme. i sure hope so because i am darned miserable!

Vin,

I'm so sorry you have chrons disease. It's a very painful disease. Now I understand why you have to take prednisone.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your first post but I do hope you heal and feel better soon.

Were you tested for co-infections? Babesia sometimes makes you run fever. I have it and run fever ever few weeks. It's most likely a herx but let your doctor know.

Vin,

It sounds like a herx. Especially the flu like symptoms. I had really bad anxiety and depression when I herxed on amoxicillian. My anxiety was so bad that i could barely drive and thats not me because i love to drive. I almost started taking anti-depressants because it was so bad. I'm better now though. This disease does so many things to our body and our mind. It's crazy!!

Hi Vin. I was tested over the past couple of weeks for lyme due to a bad rash that came up on me all of sudden, with itching though. My lyme test came back negative, however my joints hurt in my elbows and knees, my hands are asleep and numb on and off, I believe this is due to the antibiotics I have had to take over the past several weeks for a not going away UTI. I was first put on Septra DS or Bactrim and on my last pill I broke out horribly from a rash, and I was changed to Ciprofloxacin and got through 17 pills and noticed my hands being asleep a lot during the night mostly when trying to sleep. Now I have slightly elevated liver enzymes and hope it is not due to ehrliososis which is another tickborne disease that can cause elevated liver enzymes.

However, I am on Asacol 400mg for ulcerative colitis which can cause elevated liver enzymes and well as the Septra DS and Ciprofloxacin I believe. I all of a sudden developed a bad headache and fever with chills for 3 days straight back several weeks ago. However, I had been suffering weeks before with a cold and it turned to a sinus infection and I was coughing pretty badly with all of that and the allergies on top of things. I am freaking that I either have this other tick disease or something else going on with my liver. I hope that it is just my medicine causing the elevated liver enzymes as I have been on it for several years and not monitored. They have redrawn blood to check that again. Needless to say this has my nerves rattled, which makes me tense and sore as I tense up in my upper body.

Take care.

How were you tested for lyme? Through the elisa and western blot? What were your values? did any of the western blot bands come back positive? If you don't have it..get a copy of your tests. Where do you live and have you travelled anywhere recently?

How high are your liver enzymes? Which ones are elevated? Worse comes to worse and its med related you can always change your meds around. Cipro is a pretty hardcore antibiotic and so is bactrim.

My liver levels have been elevated at times when I was on copious amounts of meds or new meds, but always dropped as I came off them. You will need to get a consistency so get your liver levels checked in a month. You liver levels can be astronomically high and you still will survive so i don't think a slightly elevated count will make you feel ill. If they are occasionally slightly elevated ask your doctor if he thinks its feasible to change from asacol to like colozal or lialda. Also ask him to check for a condition called PSC. But not until other things are ruled out.

The likely scenario for you feeling ill is you are suffering allergies and your sinus infection is lingering. are you having any colitis symptoms like bloat, gas, etc? Any kind of illness you get(sinus, colds, allergies) can flare up your colitis as a secondary infection which can make you ill as well.

At Wits End,

Just to relieve your mind a little....I have been having slightly elevated liver enzymes off and on for a few years now. I'm not saying it's good to have this but I have no symptoms from it. I didn't even know they were elevated until my blood results came back. I had a CBC which checks everything and that's the only reason I knew they were high. It could be anything. It could be fatty deposits. Even eating certain things can bring them up. Do you remember what the numbers were? Were they AST and ALT?

I know everyone is different but I don't think a slight raise can hurt you. That's just my opinion from what I've been through.

Edited to add that anytime you are on medication for a long time, you should always have your liver enzymes checked. At least every 3 months to start.
